miles southwest from Abileue had
the misfortune to get his bam
burned up last Sunday. He lost
a mowing machine four calves
and all his grain and fodder. The
barn caught from some fire in a
clearing nearby. There was no
iusurauce on it. Mr. Burchard
had came to town on business and
found the bnm burned when he
returned home.

The Women's crusade against

now. 3
Jake Kiirain is now serving his
two-months imprisonment in a
Mississippi jail. These two months
are likely to be the least harmful of
any like period of his life.
The general government is
about to undertake to test the
feasibility of procuring artesian
water in the two Dakotas.
The Tom Fulcher murder case
from Jones county has been re-
manded by the Court of Appeals
and Tom will have another trial
and another chance for his life.
About forty sections of the
Swenson lands north of here have
been placed on the market in
tracts to suit purchasers.
Quite serious damage was done
to farms and pastures 111 Callahan
county last week by fire. There
were also some fires in the south-
western part of this county that
put the people to considerable
trouble.
United States troops drove the
boomers off the Cherokee strip
last week but they found it a
rather tough job. It was tough
on the boomers too.
"We are in receipt of a Copy of
the Merl-el Mail published atMer-

a very neat and creditable paper
and the News wishes it success.
We have arranged to begin
shortly the charming serial
story "The Mandarin's Daugh-

the brilliant Chinese journalist of
New York. This atory alone will
be worth the price of the paper
for a whole year.
Maj. C. W. Simpson one of the
editors of the Fisher Count v Call
was in Abilene a few days ago
and made the News a call. The
new management have materially
improved the paper and we wish

The people of Abilene have
raised $15000 to bore an artesian
well. They expect the Santa Fe
and Aransas Pass roads in less
than twelve inonthB. Roby Call.
The people as you say are go-
ing to hare artesian water and
the success of the city depends
more on that than on the coming
of the Santa Fe and Aransas Pas
f
railroads.
'Taylor is now putting on city
airs. She will soon have a $6oJ-
000 compress and intends to do a
landlord business this fall. Liber-
ty Mill Cyclone.
Taylor's artesian well helped to
give her a boost forward and yet
there are people who contend tha
artesian wells are no material be
efit to a place. Such men seldo
see a benefit in anything.
The publishers of the Comanchjc
Chief announce that they will sejil
that paper or a half interest in it.
It is a good paper and those jn
search of a newspaper field could
do well there.
A few days ago the Louisiana
Lottery Company sent the Gov-
ernor of Louisiana a check for
$100000 to be used for levee pur-
poses but governor Nichols vdry
promptly and very properly re-
turned it. The charter of this
carpet bag institution will soon
expire and it is throwing out baits
for an extension. The people of
the whole country should thnnk
governor Nichols for refusing to
bite at it. j
It is not an uncommon thing to
hear mention made of prospective
candidates for county offices Ibut
so far they are making a still aunt
of it. Down in Coleman county
thirteen candidates for county of-
fices are publicly announced.
Taylor county will have a full
crop of candidates though they
may be late in "coming up ;" she
is seldom far behind in the pro-
cession. !
It is for the legislature instead of
the Senate that Hon. J. N. Bush-
ing of Baird is being mentioned
as a probable candidate. As yet
we do not know who will be can-
didates for that position and con-
sequently cannot Bay who will he
our preference personally but
this much can be said for Mr.
Rushing that he is an able man
and possesses many of the jbest
qualities of statesmanship arid he
has in time past done good service
in the state senate. We are

very neat five-column quarto.
Next Tuesday is th 5 nmnicipal

ajini vote as there are no rival
candidates fux? any of the priei-
pal offices. It may be however
that by Tuesday the interest in
the election of aldermen will be-
come sufficient to secure a good
vote. .The only advice the News
has to give is to vote JTor the best
men and the only preference it
has is in favor of thosje best fitted
to discharge the dnjties of the
