We have seen Baron Roths-
child classed as a gold bug by the
third party press so long that it is
hard to believe him anything else.
And yet he is a bi-metalist and has
time and again so avowed him-
self. In his testimony before the
French monetary convention in '
1869 he said: "The simultaneous r
emnlovment of the two metals is
satisfactory and gives rise to no
complaint. Whether gold 01' Sll
ver dominates for the time being
it is always true that the metals
concur together in formiu
the '
monetary circulation of the world
and it is the general mass of the
two metals combined which serves
as the measure of the value of
things. The suppression of silver
would amount to a veritable de-
struction of values without any
compensation."

A Newspaper Condenser.
One of the most valuable pieces
of newspaper furniture is the
"condenser" which has its very
practical uses; the editor needa it
when inclined to write column ar-
ticles which possess the geomet-
ric distinction of "length without
breadth77 being admirably calcula
ted to put l the devout reader to
at 95 degrees in the shade; cor- j
respondents sometimes find it a '
valuable article when forgetting
the impossibility of crowding two
columns of manuscript into one
column of type they wander so
far from the stern facts as to ex-
perience a sense of foreloru lone-
liness; in these busy and hurrying
times a well arranged condenser
which will do as crushingiy good
work as the press in a cider mill
is an indispensable portion of a
newspaper man's outfit. Clinton.

Houston Tex. June 8 Dear
sir: The faulty and slovenly pack-
ing of American cbtton has be-
come a reproach and has called
forth such universal protest that
the Maratime Associations of this
country and Europe have recently
established rules which we be-
lieve will in the end be worth
millions-of dollars to the cotton
producers of this country.
Of late years it seems to
have
been the idea that no bagging was
necessary except us a pretense.
The spinner and exporter know-
ing that a heavy loss in weight as
well as damage from exposure was
inevitable by reason of such
belling have provided for such
loss in their calculations as to
how much they could offord to
pay for cotton on the spot.
The injury resulting from card
lessness and negligence in baling
one of the most valuable products
of the country has recoiled upon
the producers. We take occasion
to call attention to the rule that
will govern the ports at New Or-
leans and Galveston in moving
the u'xt crop which directly in-
terests you. for the reason that if
bales are not in merchantable or-
der they will be made so at the
expense ot the shipper.
'RiLK: Prom and after Septemv
ber 1st 1S!)" all bales of new
crop cottou not fully covered
with bagging of a minimum weight
of li lbs. per yard shall be de-
clared unmerchantable unless
properly recovered at the expense
ol the selleiv
Of necessity all receivers of
cotton will scrutinize very closely
every bale of new crop and no
buyer will taka a bale until it
meets the requirements of his
freight engagemet.
To protect yourself we now ad-
vise that you buy nothing lighter
than Ui lb. bagging and if your
ginner furnishes the bagging
make it a part ot the contract that
no lighter weight shall go on your
bales and that ends and sides are
well protected.
Yours very truly

Recent statistics of longevity
reveai some interesting facts. In
cold countries like Norway -there
are many centenarians and many
me iwunu in noi countries near
the equator. Very old people are
numerous among the mountains of
tne northern states and in the
swamps of Louisiana. They are
just as common in our largest
cities as they are in the farming
districts. Locality and climate
apparently have little to do with
longevity Atlanta Constitution.
Crossing of the bufialo with'

proven so profitable that the rals-
fers of this novel species are going

If two men should meet any-
whero in Texas and either should
strike the other to do bodily hurt
a criminal offense would be com-
mitted aud it would be the duty
of the authorities' of the locality
in which the offense was committed
to arrest and punish the offenders.
But James Corbett and Robert
Fitzsimmons are to meet in Texas
and fight until one or the other is
no longer able to fight
told that no offense w
mitted. It is reason
that blood will be
