The Dallas News is in its glory.
Its management or someone else
has prevailed upon ex-governor
Koberts to become an "independ-
ent democratic" candidate for
governor. The News now sees
an opportunity (or at least thinks
it does) of everlastingly lambast-
ing the democratic administration
in Texas. Governor Roberts is a
very old man. In his younger
days he would have disavowed
the idea of there being such a
thing as an independent democrat-
ic state or national politics. We
do not know how far the Dai-Gal
News will be able to carry this
diyersion nor how near it is go-
ing to come to disrupting the
democratic party in Texas. If
Governor Roberts should be nom-
inated by a majority of the demo-
crats in the regular way for get-
ting such expressions we should
vote for him; but as an independ-
ent never.
In speaking of Governor Hogg's
brief indorsement of the present
state administration the Dallas
News says:
"And ex-Gov. Hogg gave the
Culberson administration only
eleven lines of nonpareil."
The following is the indorsement
to which the News referred and
the indorsement contains more of
commendation for the administra-
tion than all the commendations
ever published by the News. In
fact it contains all that is neces-
sary to be said:
"We have an able honest clean
economical state administration.
Gov. Cnlberson is the equal of
any chief magistrate who has ever
filled the executive chair and I
am for him and hjs associates un-
equivocally unstintingly freely
openly and above board for re-
election. They deserve as they
cordially have the confidence
the respect and affection of the
people who will 3ee that they are
triumphantly returned to their
present positions of honor and
trust"
There is a popular but sadly
mistaken idea with regard to the
kind of boys that are wanted for
the navy. If the boy is wild it is
considered just the thing to
ship as an apprentice in the navy.
This is all wrong. A naval officer
says the navy is not the place for
the correction of a wayward or
ill-mannered boy. The govern-
ment wants bright healthy well-
disposed and intelligent lads not
yonng hoodlums. For good sharp
active boys there is a future in
the navy. They may be promoted
to the position of warrant officers
gunners or- boatswains. If they
want to study engineering it may
be possible should the position
of master machinist be added to
the warrant officer's list for them
to have an opportunity oi secur
ing that place. Globe-Democrat.

Deadly Sntmy of Proiiparity.
Uo kind of money will circu-
late freely after conf dence has
been destroyed. Comparatively
little cash is needed by' any peo
ple who have the confidence of
the commercial world; yet such a
people will always have cash in
abundance and of the very best
kind. Confidence will take the
place of cash but cash will not
perform 'the functions of confi-
dence. The trouble in this coun-
try is the result; chiefly of a loss
of confidence. This grievous loss
is the result of demands and
threats made by the fiatiste and
repudiationists of the land. These
short-sighted howlers are driving
both cash and confidence" out of
the country or out of circulation.
If their demands and threats alone
have caused cessation of invest-
ments and withdrawal of millions
of gold how much more disas-
trous would be the case if they
had the power to enforce the de-
mands and to execute the threats!
The American people have been
measuring values with the mone-
tary standard of the commercial
world for many years. They
have received "the substance or
the equivalent of gold dollars in
exchange for their services or
their products and have received
valuable consideration of the same
sort in their dealings with money
lenders. If we were not on this
basis to-day it would be the part
of wisdom to come to it as a mat-
ter of self-defense as quickly as
possible. Being on this basis al-
ready to abandon it for the cha-
otic uncertainty of fiatism would
assuredly be a most desperate fol-
ly. No compromise should be
made with any man who is eager
to bring the country down to so
fearful a situation. If such a man
believes it right to promote and
if possible precipitate such a
catastrophe his faith and honesty
make him all the more dangerous.
Demagogues who agitate in this
direction as a means of securing
or keeping office should certainly
be opposed and fought to the ex-
tremity. They have cost the
country enough already. They
should not be countenanced or
encouraged and the sound mon-
ey man who lends a hand to help
them into power is simply push-
ing along the movement to over-
whelm his cause and grievously
afliict the people. The man who
has been deceived by such dema-
gogues is of course not to be con-
demned or abused. The ques-
tion should be laid before him
plainly and fairly and he should
be urged to stand up for the res-
toration of confidence and for the
credit safety and prosperity of
the country. Of course some
candidates are honest in their
contention for free silver and
these should also be treated with
friendly consideration and regard-
ed as fit subjects for faithful mis-
sionary work. There are other
candidates who are pushing this
craze merely as a means of ex-
ploiting popular credulity for the
promotion ot their own cupidity
and ambition. They know better.
They are all things to all men.
They are a dangerous lot. The
intelligent and patriotic voter
who really sees the danger in fiat-
ism and repudiation owes it to
himself to do everything in his
power to defeat unscrupulous and
reckless self-seekers of this stripe.
They it is who have driven con-
fidence cash and trade out of this
country or into paralysis by sys-
tematic and shameless appeals to
the infirmities of their victims.
They should be deprived of their
power for evil as soon as possible.
Their vile and pernicious occupa-
tion should be made to perish by
hopeless failure and absolute in-
anition as soon as possible. The
business and peace of the country
and the vital interests of the peo-
ple demand that this shall be done.

The Texas Bolters.
To a calm and dispassionate ob-
server familier with the existing
conditions there is not the shad-
ow of excuse for the bolt which
was organized in advance of
party action at Dallas Tuesday.
It was hasty ill-advised ill-tempered
and absolutely causeless.
There might have been some ex-
cuse in holding separate primaries
and conventions if the executive
committee had refused upon
popular demand to abrogate the
rule originally promulgated and
which restricted the scope of the
ballot. Hundreds and thousands
of democrats might have insisted
with sound argument that the op-
eration of such a rule would prac-
tically disfranchise them in the
party councils. Now no restric-
tion exists no democrat is exclud-
ed by reason of the action of the
committee. lis objoctonable
work has been undone and undone
in advance of the reckless delib-
erate and unjustifiable bolt at Dal-
las. The reasoning upon which
the Dallas conference acted might
have had force a month ago now
it is absolutely and altogether in-
applicable. The Dallas resoluiions proceed
from the preamble that "Dudley
and his packed committee" have
(."attempted" to do certain objec
tionable and undemocratic things.
Granted that the "attempt" was
made did it succeed?
Was not the action complained
of rescinded
Are not the regular primaries
open to a full and fair expression
of opinion and selection?
What figure therefore does
Dudley and his committee cut now
in the campaign or the party ex-
presssion. or the selection of del-
egates? Absolutely none and it is in
the power of the state convention
to rebuke this committee if it sees
proper for "attempted" usurpation
of power. It is not for a mere con-
ference representing a faction to
dethrone the committee and order
new primaries and new convention.
Such a thing is absurd.
In the present status such action
is in the nature of an ex post facto
law after the offence has ceased to
exist and as silly and meaningless
as it is useless.
Will anybody contend that such
men as were in Dallas conference
do not appreciate the sophistry
of their argument. ' Or that they
are unconscious of the fact that
they have laid down a false pre-
mise and are reasoning from a
false aud untenable standpoint?
Certainly not no one believes
them so dull as that.
What is the inference then?
There can be but one and that
is the direct and simple conclu-
sion that believing themselves
beaten anq devoid of party loy-
alty they have deliberately and
cold-bloodedly and deliantly de-
