DEAR ABBY: I've been flow-
ing your column and am particu-
larly disgusted with the way you
coddle our young people who have
strayed from the ways-of righteous
and decent living. I refer to your
stressing the great numbers of un-
wed mothers who have sinned but
manage to build happy lives in
spite of it. You encourage them to
"hold their head high" and to "for-
get it!" If girls who have had
tftbies out of wedlock were cast
out of society and made to suffer
a little more for their sins they
oould serve as examples of other
girls who are tempted to do the
same thing. I'm glad I have no
everyone who gets caught In
mistake, hundreds (by the grace
of God) are spared the ugly con-
sequences which cfeuld easily
have attended their misdoings.
Who are we to sit In judgment
of those who were less fortu-
nate than ourselves?
DEAR ABBY: It reassures me
to read your answers shifting the
blame to parents when young girls
find themselves in the difficulties
described by DESERTED, JMy par
erits meant well, but they impress-
ed upon my mind that sex was vile
and we were not to mention it In
our home. T was curious and nor-
mal and at first opportunity I went
exploring for myself. I left very
few stones unturned. Thank heav-
ens maturity caught uo with me
before my luck ran out. Please,
continue, Dear Abby, to use every
opportunity to restate the respon-
sibility of parents to take a, .firm
stand on the subject of sex mo-
rality: relating acceptable be-
havior to strength of character
rather than abstract good and
evil- * J.A

Game Lou Costello
Bel
VINTON
the lo;al
By BOB THOMAS
AP Movie-TV Writer
HOLLYWOOD (AP) - A game
l.'uie guy named Lou Costello has
been erased from the movie
scene. Hell be' missed. •
Lou was a show businots natur-
al. Nobody could explain why he
was so funny. He was no intel-
lectual. no student of human foi-
bles. His material had no subtleiy
nor polish. Indeed, much of it had
been worked over and over by a
generation of. burlesque comics.
But when Lou did the routines,
they seemed funnier. For one
thin£, he had in Bud Abbott a
straight man who had no juper
ior. Ami the public seemed to'rec-
ognize Lou for the natural he
was — an abnormally funny man.
As far as can be Judged, Lou
Costello had no enemies. Even
Bud Abbott, with whom he some-
times feuded, couldn't stay mad
at him for long.
The reason was that Lou was
completely outgoing. He was gen-
erous to a fault — which was all
right when the money was flow-
ing in, but brought him trouble
later. He lacked complexity.
When he worked, he worked hard.
When he played, it was the same
way. . . N
Recentty he recalled how hard
he had worked in films: "I used
to come home mentally and phy-
sically exhausted, Nobody knew
it, but I was almost sick. All those
pratfalls! They take a lot out of
you. I'd go to the studio feeling
tired the next morning."
Offstage; Lou played strenuous-
ly, too. In their heyday, he and
Bud had a card game going at
ajl times on their movie sets.
They played for .high stakes, and
for keeps.
That was in the time When <he
money was. flowing in faat. After
they made "Buck Privates," they
shot to the top of the tnov a popu-
larity polls. —
The big money continued for a
down years. Once Lou told me
and Bud had earned 1% mil
dollars a year for over a
cade, yet nefther had been able
to save a nest egg.
Over 90 per cent went to taxes,
the rest to writers, agents, law-
yers. etc. And Lou was always
an easy touch for unlucxy oldtim-
ers.
When the Jobs started getting
more scarce, Lou made his tough-
est decision: a final split with
Bud, A long series of illnesses had
left him in poor health, bat he
couldn't afford to retire.
Last fltfl, he was proud that he
broke the Las Vegas ttten lance
record at the Dunes. He was as
fanny as ever, but strangely re-
strained. Few realized that Lou
was then a sick man, but still
playing the clown because he had
to. •
