Soundings which have been taken on
the Galvesto.1 (Texas) bar shows that
the depth of water is steadily increasing
owing to the scowiag action caused by
the4 jetties. Recently the steitmhip
Lenore drawing Sixteen feet one inch
crossed the bar the Ode being about
avarage. On one day last week the
soundings showed seventeen feet clear.
Last week the finishing capstone was
put in place on the great dam at Austin
Texas This is just three years forrri
the date when the city voted for the
bonds with which to carry on the work.
The city council and members of the
board of public wotks were present on
the occasion but other than an infor-
mal address no ceremonies were ob-
served. The Texas bulding at the world's
fair will be completed within thirty days
and ready for visitors. A carload of
banana and magnolia trees have been
recieved and wiU be planted around
the building. The exhibits most of
which are on hand are being put in
place as rapidly as the workmen on the
building finish their wofkr and indica-
tions are that the display will be equal
lo that of any state represented. The
delay in completing the building has
been owing to the tardy action of the
legislature in appropriating funds for
the purpose.

The Proposed Terrible Borse Racu

Geo.-T. Angell president of the
American humane education society
the Massachuietts society for the pre
vernation of cruelty to animals and the
parent American baud of mercy says
in "Our Ormb AnitnaU:"
Our readers all remember the terri
ble norse rice between German aiid
Austrian officers which a few months
ago shook (he humane sentiment of the
civilized world.
From our February paper they also
learned that some three hundred cow
boys were proposing to start from
Chadron Nebraska at sunrise on May
15. lor a similar race of over seven

The daily attendance at the exposi-
tion is not so large as was expected
but is fairly good.. As the spring is
breaking better weather will bring lar
ger ciods. .
The ladies of Galveston have been
creating a sensation evtty day this
week by distributing free in the horti-
cultural hall several thousand beauti-
ful Cape jVsamins. These flowers are
almost Unknown in this northern coun-
try and the Galveston ladies have by
this unique means of advertising done
.more to make Galveston talked about
than any thing they could have done.
If other Texas localities were to
adopt something of this kind the re
suits would be more than any one can
calculate.
Pope Leo has sent a most interest-
ing exhibit from the archives the vati
can consisting ol letters bills etc. from
the .most lemote times of church
history. Many of these Valuable
1 documents relate to the voyages of
Columbus and the early settlement of
America. In the transpotaion build-
ing the foreign ship builders are mak-'
ing seme wonderful displays. A model
of H. M. S. "Victoria." built by Sir
W. G Armstrong Mitchell & Co. of
Newcastle-on-Tyne fs shown as a mar
vel Of mans craft. I was unable to
Secure the scale upjn which the model
is built but suppose it to be at least
25 feet long by 8 feet wide. In all of
its parts it is a complete ship carrying
wonderful guns and the hull it protect-
ed by chain armour. The most won-
derlul thing about the ship that I saw
was the steam tUgs that She carries
above deck which can be lowered at
a raomen s notice and be made to do
service a ase of necessity.
The state of Missouri has made a
display of her mineral resources in the
mmes building that is attracting the
attention of thousands to the mineral
resources of that state.
One of the most wonderful exhibits
in any of the state buildings is a dupli-
cation of the state capital of Iowa built
in a small scale constructed out of
fine wire and the rooms of which are
filled with bright samples of cereals of
various varieties and colors The
model 'S. a wonder and the exhibits of
grain ii astounding.
In the Illinois state building is a
picture.25 x 30 feet made entirely out
of grasses. It is a farm scene with
farm cottage orchard fowl y trd fields
of wavering wneat a.d altogether pre?
sents one of the most beautiful farm
pictures that I ever saw.
Mr F. M Knight of Greenville has
arrived with the exhibit from the pub-
lic schools of that cuy. It is is made
in the reproduction of the Panthenon of
Rome and will attract much attention
when it is set up in the Texas building.
Mrs. Tobin president expects to
have the Texas building dedicated
