Sucrgets a Budget
For Chamber to Put
Over Regular Work
To tho 'Editor:
After an absenco of ten years from
this city one Is astonished at tho pro-
press mado during this decade noth-
ing of a shifting or Jpqom nature has
cntcrod Into Its growth. In all the&o
years it must -have been guided by
men of wisdom ond integrity.
Hundreds of beautiful homes and
scores Of modern business houses have
bcon erected Miles of sidewalks and
paved streets have been built. Great
school and colleges hnyokept pace
with tho matorfal development to ih
end that Abilene Is tho peer of uny
city in America in Its clabs
But Its greatness does not consist
alono In Its beauty its wealth nor Its
cYunmorciat nuuromniicv. but in a
stalwart pooplo whoso virtues make
for a greater citizenship. Removed
frotu tho contaminating Influence of
tho great hoards of immigrants pour-
ing Into our fair land hero pcoplo
havo marched In the vanguard of clv-
Iglzation bringing with them tho high
Anglo-Saxon Ideals out of which havo
been wrought hor grent institutions.
Natural and racial advantages count
for much. To build a great commun-
ity out of these fundamental elements
thortfmust be unity of purpose among
her pcoplo. Their efforts must bo
centered In and directed by a clearing
housu so to speak known usualy as a
Chamber of Commerce.
To argUo tho necessity for such a
body would b ns usolesy as to arguo
the necessity for a human heart in the
great vascular system. Tho Vital ques-
tion that now concerns us Is how to
maintain tho high cfflciencv of our
Chamber of Commerce and. -if possib-
le mako it oven a greater forco for
public good. Everv loval citizen re-
gardless of business interest I should
havo said of rll busincFS Interest should
rally to tho suim rt of this organizat-

River Traffic On
Mississippi Proves
a Valuable Asset
(Bv tho Associated Preas)
CHICAGO. July 29. A resumption
of river traffic along America's chief
river highway tho Mississippi was
forecast hero last week with tho ar-
rival at New Orleans of a shipment
eaual to sevcnty-flvo cartoads of fre-
ight; ono of tho carloads containing
books. . ... .
Tho tup which was. mado partly by
rail out of Chicago to tho Mississippi
river consumed twelve days and m-
nirv bns revealed thta this Ib only
tho ordinary tlmo that It has taken!
numerous similar cargoes 10 bu pu-
rled over tho 12G0 miles.
RIvormen point out It Is almost cer-
tain that tho Chicago drnlnago Canal
which will connect Lako Michigan
wltlf tho Mississippi by a canal suf
ficient to accommodate uio largest
barge nmr operating on inland Waters
will bo completed within fivo years.
They call attention to tho large
amount of freight now going south
by waur and freely stato that the
ngltation that haa brought tho great
er waterways movement to um iuiu
has nwakencd tho public to the pos-
sibilities of water shipment.
F. IT. Maloney of tho Mississippi
Bargo iJno sa'd: "More and more pco-
plo nro shipping by water and It la
only a Question of a shorttimo when
tho river trade moro up to dato and
with all the old time faults elimin-
ated will bo flourishing to a far
greater extent than In tho days when
hugo shipments by railroad wcro un-
known." f
