Pickwicker
Fall, 1989
The process of editing and publishing
The Pickwicker begins the second week of the
semester with a meeting of all those persons
interested in working on the literary
magazine. Anyone wanting to serve on the
staff of The Pickwicker is encouraged to
attend that meeting (the office of the
Department of English can inform you of the
time and the place).
Jobs are assigned at this meeting.
Someone agrees to design and distribute flyers
calling for submissions. Someone else contacts
The Optimist so that announcements and
articles on the publication can be presented to
the student body. Someone else begins
contacting businesses and University offices
about placing advertisements in
the coming issue. Others agree to serve on
committees which will read all the
submissions.
The selection process is time consuming
but educational. For this issue of The
Pickwicker there were about twenty stories,
five essays, and 150 poems submitted. The
quality of writing of these submissions was
very high, but space did not permit all to be
accepted. Therefore the members of the
committees each read all the pieces in their
genre, rated each piece on a scale of one to
five, and had each rating entered in a common
ledger. The ratings were averaged, and those
with the highest ratings (with two exceptions)
were accepted for publication.
At this point the staff sometimes chooses
a theme for the issue. In looking over all the
material, the staff noticed that many of the
works concerned self-examination of both
intellectual and spiritual elements. Thereforeit seemed appropriate to choose for this issue
the theme "Mind and Spirit," which reminds
one of the blend of the intellectual and the
religious which is of paramount importance
here at Abilene Christian University.
The chosen pieces must then be typed
into a computer, printed out on a laser printer,
laid out on lined sheets, and delivered to the
printer.
The staff of The Pickwicker hopes that
you enjoy these works and that enjoyment,
enlightenment, and energy may be yours as a
result of your experience of this magazine.
May both your mind and spirit be refreshed.Laughter and other Sins
