[Letter from de Zavala Jr to Adina March 24th 1889] Page: 1 of 2 (Transcription)

Miss Adina de Zavala.
San Antonio, Texas.

My dear Adina,

You can hardly imagine how
glad I was on my receiving your affectionate and welcome letter
of 2nd February. It had been a really long time since I heard
from you and I was always thinking of all of you and wondering
at not having any news from you and the family. I often
thought of writing to you; but then I did not know your
address, supposing that you had probably removed from the
place where you were living at, when you wrote me last.

I am exceedingly sorry to learn from you that
your good father has been always suffering more of less from
his old complaint, and I hope the Almighty will grant him
the restoration of his heath thoroughly and that he will
spend his days in perfect joy and contentment. I am also
sorry to learn that my niece Florence has been in delicate health
and I do hope that by this time she will be completely restored.

Your aunt also has been suffering owing
to bad health and had it not been for the great care we have
taken of her, she would have been dead long ago. The rest of my
family are in the enjoyment of perfect health.

You were good enough to apprise me of Katie's death.
Had it not been for you, I should have been kept ignorant of this
sad event. Poor Katie! She is now free from all the troubles of this
life, and I do hope she is now enjoying in heaven those blessings we all mortals
are aiming at for after our death. This life, dear me, is uncertain
