recent meeting to obtain state eo-

Rio Grande from .Brownsville this
land to be turned over to the federal
government for a national park. A
recent resolution by congress pre-
vents Ihe federal government from
purchasing land for this purpose but
it can accept the land from the state
and provide for its maintenance as a
national park.
The proposed national park is
bounded on three sides by the Rip
Grande river and is in the form of a
rough triangle. The point of the tri-
angle is the most southerly point on
the mainland of the United States with
the possible exception of a mile or
two of mangrove swamp on the south-
ern extremity of the Florida penin-
sula. In the proposed national park
is the famous Rabb palm grove the
i largest natural palm grove in the
United States.
I The entire area presents a scene
of tropic beauty. Gigantic palms
thrive in the rich soil of the Rio
Grande delta and the entire area is
covered with rich heavy vegetation.
feix lalces and lagoons in some past
period river beds of the Rio Grande
wind through this triangle the shores
. a mass of towering palms vines and
flowering plants.
The proposition will be presented
to the Texas legislature early in Jan-
uary and the state will be asked to
purchase the land and transfer it to
the federal government- Every sec-
tion of the Valley is organized for the

MUCH MATERIAL
lEVELOPMENT IN
GOOD YEAR 1922
(CONTINUED FROM PAGE ONE.)
has been developed in a large way
and is now reckoned as ono of thu
important fields of the southwest.
Many wells are producing a high
grade oil and several wells are ex-
pected to come n during the- earlier
part of the coming" year. Oil develop-
ment in Brown county has assumed
three important phases the north
Brown county field the deep tests
now being made in the shallow field
near Brownwood notably on Hall
Mountain by the Midway Oil Com-
pany and in the suburbs of Brown-
wood where the Jordan well is. at-
tracting attention. Other locations
have been secured in the vicinity of
the Jordan well and it is understood
this part'cular area will be developed
during the .coming year.
Prospective.
Many things might be mentioned as
in contemplation for 1!)23. It has been
suggested that the Cottcn Belt rail-
road extend its train service to
Brownwood by way of Comanche us
the Cotton Belt passenger train that
runs from Waco to Comanche gets to
Comanche early in th0 night and
stands there until the following
morning- Why not run over the Frisco
tracks to Brownwood? Of course the
Frisqo people might not want such an
arrangement but ii it could be done
t would give direct connection with
Waco and also open a new route to
Houston and other South Texas
points. ' . .
Then .there is. the ever present ex-
tension problem of the road ro.m May
to Rising Star. At first blush-it seems
.that this would be a payng propo-
sition but from some cause the pro-
ject has not been pushed.
There are many other things i
contemplation and as time passes
during the coming year the Bulletin
will mention each and do its part to-
wards boosting all worthy enter-
prises. Oueer Sounds Heard
When Screech Owl Is j
Captured in Rat Trap
PORTLAND. Ore.. Dec. 13. A trap j
.set in a downtown office here to catch j
rats snapped on a ful-grown screech ;
owl recently. 1
There had been buttering eery nois-i
es emanating from -the ollice at night.!
Employes in an adjoining engraving
office who frequently worked late
hear the. "ghost" sounds.
Each morning papers were strewn
over the room where the owl was
caught. The -windows of the office
were left open and it is presumed that
the owl made nightly visits to catch
the rats in the trap until its demise re-
sulted in the same trap.
