TUESDAY AUGUST J 1910
THE BROWN COUNTY
PLATFORM
The platform and resolutions
adopted last Saturday hy the
Brown county Democratic con-
vention was an adroitly written
document designed to conform to
the wishes of the majority of the
WhIIv elected delegates to the
convention but without regard
to-the -real sentiment of the peo-
ple of Brown county.
Tiie platform adopted Saturday'
paid a pretty compliment to the
Wilson administration as it
should do and was expected to
do. -Then Article two says "We
believe in State Bights .and lo
cal self .firovernment." etc. Ev
(j
ery time the people of Brown
county have voted on the matter
they have declared that they are
opposed to the liquor traffic.' In
the recent primary Brown county
gave a majority for submission;-
it gave a plurality to J)r- Brooks.
the only senatorial candidate la-
voring all forms of prohibitum-
The question of national jprohibi-
tion and state rights has never
been voted upon as such hi. this
county but there can be no doubt
that a majority of the p0pple -of.
this county favor national prohi-
bition as they do local option aiul
statewide prohibition.
Further the platform '-hdopiwj
Saturday declared that ' we . be-
lieve that the administration af-
fairs of the state by the l.)ejn:i-
cratic party under the attic leadVj
ership of Governor James h. rr
guson has been wise and 7 effi-
cient." This in spite of the fact
that in. tli e primary election a
week before a majority iof the
people of t3iis county lijhd' "at-
tempted to break a precedent and
depose Governor Ferguson in fa-
vor of an almost imknowj? candi-
date for the place.
One of two things is fvnlci.il 3
Either the system is fnnjlfuneni-
allv wrong or the platfofm aiid
resolutions adopted by tins Brtmn
county convention was nor. in-
tended to represent the seaitimcu.t
of the people of the county it
was a platform written tokxpress
the sentiment of the nnU-jirohiJii-.
tion minority but with the tech
nical sanction of ail the people of-
the county.
In McLennan county r which'
was carried by Governor -FerguT
was carried by Governorl.FvrgUr
trolled by prohibitionists who
wrote a platform in whifth criti
cism of the Governor eoiild he
easily read. With this as" n
theme the Beaumont KtiAcrprise
says: "'
.'"We first vote for ofifteesecdV
ers in a direct primary and then
we leave .it to a few men to get
together in primary precinct con-
ventions to select the delegates to
the conventions whose business it
is to give effect to the verdict' of
the nrimarv elections. There is
M -
nothing to prevent a faction that
it clearly in the minority from
sending men to the district and
state conventions who do hot rep-
resent the views of a majority of
the voters they are delegated to
speak for. It is quite as possible
for a county the majority of
whose voters do not agree -with
the views of the successful candi-
date to send a delegation .to the
convention that ratifies his nom-
ination who will vote with him
on all questions as it is for the
contrary to happen.
"If we would avoid this we
must free the primary election
system from adulteration -or re-
turn to the primary convention
system. The mixture forced upon
iis by the Terrell election law
will ultimately destroy the demo-
cratic party in this state" unless
itds discarded." ' i
