Mr. Williams introduced a bill
in congress which may revive
the hope of all those in the South
whose property was seized dur
ing the war by Federal troops.
The bill confers jurisdiction on
the court of claims to try all
suits for recovery whether the
claimant has sued before or not.
No proof of loyalty is to be re-
quired and any testimony re-
ports or other papers in any of
the departments of the govern-
ment are to be accepted as evi-
dence of the seizure of property
under the act of 1883. The bill
nullifies all sales transfers as-
signments and fee contracts
heretofore made and provides
that for any attorney service
rendered herefter in these cases
the amount of fee is to be deter-
mined by the court.
"Caracul" It Etymology.
I have often been asked for the ety-
mology of "caracnl" which is a term
now largely used by furriers to denote
a rariety of the fur called a6trnkhnn.
The new English dictionary does not
contain caracul but it has caracal
which is liable to be confused with it
though "really quite a different wprd.
The caracal is an animal but caracul
like the nearly synonymous term! a?

There I work all day by electric light

conditions make no difference because
my flat and my office belong to the

Extricated by Officers Spears and Bates
After a Most Wilful Demonstration
of Wife Beating and Cruelty.
About 9:30 o'olock Monday
night after a scandalous and out-
rageous demonstration of cow-
ardice and utter loss of all in-
stinots of humanity and stimu-
lated by the beastly absorption of
a terrible quantity of devil-eye
whiskey J B. Clayton was ex-
trioated from a retreat under bis
bed whither the man had taken
refuge after ooncluding that
Deputy Sheriff Walter Spears
and Deputy Marshall Carroll
Bates meint to make the wife-
beater answer for his misde-
meanor. Clayton and his wife live near
: the Santa Fe round house in
Nrth San Angelo and last even
ing the man tanked up on booze
and prooeeded to stir up the
neighborhood by threatening to
kill his wife. The man bad
knife and flashed it around in
lively fashion the unfortunate
wife screamed with terror' and
the neighbors immediately tele
phoned for officers
Messrs. Spears and Bates were
at the scene of the disturbance at
onoe and straightway made their
presence known. The man Clay
ton finally hied to the house and
took refuge under a bed.
What makes the happenings
sadder and the offenoe more
wioked is the faot that a ten year
old daughter lays sick at the
Clayton home and the disturb-
ance therefore came as all the
more heart-rending'.

For Marshal.
W. T. Hoskinson requests the
Bulletin to eay that he is a candi
date for city marshal. Some
time ago be announced that he
would run but failed to put his
name in the announcement col-
umn of the paper until he says it
is a necessity as he is being
asked if he is still a candidate.
He says that he expects to stay in
the race. Mr. Hoskinson's quali-
fications are too well known to
need additional endorsement
from the Bulletin. If he if
eleoted the people can rest as-
sured that the duties of the office
will be fully discharged as he
understands them.

Majestic Theatre Preparing for a Graad
Opening in Their New Quarters.
Next week the Majestic theatre
will move into its new quarters
on Center Avenue and on open-

the Brownwood band. During
their stay in the city the mana-

benefit to show their apprecia-

said about the class of entertain-

has recently employed a new-

effort to get the front in musical
circles. They have secured tick-

some prize to tne young iadv
who will sell the greatest num

formance at the Majestic. The
prize is a pretty bracelet "and
would be well worth the while
of any young lady to try for.
Tickets can be secured at Brooke
