LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Makes Complaint
About Inefficiency
Of Sewer System
Editor, The Wylie News:
In regard to all people, no hard
feelings toward any one.
I am writing this letter to let
the people know the truth. We
have had trouble with our sewer
line stopping up several times,
backing the water up into the
houses, and I talked to two of
the Councilmen, Buck Boyd and
Roddy Groves, and they told me
they couldn't make a living see-
ing after the sewer trouble. I am
asking why they ask for the of-
fice. A man ought not to ask for
something that he could not
handle. And I ask the people to
write in and give me some advice
on this. I will appreciate it.

Opposes Federal Aid
To Education
Editor, The Wylie News:
I would like to openly express
my opposition to federal aid to
education in any form.
First, we have been misled by
propaganda, paid for by your tax
money, and urged by groups who
want federal control of our
schools.
These are the facts. In 1900 we
ihad one teacher for every 36
pupils. In 1930, one to every 30
pupils. In 1955, the ratio was one
to 26 pupils. Teachers are not
quitting their jobs in droves. Only
1.2 percent of teachers left to
take other jobs last year. We do
need to raise our teachers' sala-
ries, however.
In 1955, 3.8 percent of the na-
tional income was spent on public
education. This compares with \xk
percent in 1900. These statistics
show that the local people have
not been letting their schools go
to pot, as the federal aid propo
nents would have u« believe.
Where then did they arrive at
this great need of classrooms and
teachers? Many states did not
send in sports for what they
thought they needed, to the White
House conference on education.
The Dept. of Health, Education
and welfare made estimates of
what they thought these states
needed. The stales that did send
in their requests were more of
what they wanted than what they
needed. They were looking for a
free handout. The schoolrooms
that were needed were more au-
ditoriums, gymnasiums, cafeterias.
Federal proponents state that
the bill would ciphon off money
from the rich states to give to the
poor states, yet if you look at
the proposed distribution you will
see that the rich states will be
receiving far more of the aggre-
gate than the poor states.
The Federal alders feel that aid
would be a stimulus toward hav-
ing better schools, by making the
local people put up their own
money to match federal funds.
Of course, not all the money
would be returned to any state.
Washington would keep plenty,
but the biggest thing that Wash-
ington would keep would be the
control over our education, which
is something we do not want to
give up.
As a parent, as a local board of
(education member, vitally inter-
ested in the future of our town
and schools and our state, and
especially our country, I would
urge each of you to write to
Honorable Sam Rayburn at the
Speaker's Rooms, Washington, D.
G\; and Senator Lyndon B. John-
son, II. S. Senate Office, Wash-
ington, D. C.; and Senator Ralph
Yarborough, urging them to do
all in their power to leave the
schools to local responsibility.
Sincerely yours,
T. M. TRIMBLE, M. D.

"Nor quite ...
Just rough and tumble kids, decked out for
choir service. A picture you'd like to see

"Suppose he can't even carry a

that he belong to the spirit of this

"And there are no words to describe
a parent's peace of mind, when he knows,

place time does not change."
