WYL1E GARDEN
CLUB ENTERTAINS
WITH LUNCHEON
Thirty members of the Wylie
Garden Club attended the annual
luncheon and final club meeting
of the year, in the Magnolia Room
of Harris' Restaurant, Garland, on
Wednesday, June 12th.
Arrangements of summer flow-
ers in wicker baskets centered
the tables, and a salad plate was
served the guests.
Mrs. J. 'A. Bixler, president,
presided over the regular business
meeting, following luncheon. Of-
ficers for the coming year were
installed, with Mrs. Ollie Adding-
ton acting as installing officer,
and presenting a corsage of red
carnations to each new officer
A movie of last year's Flower
Show was shown by Mrs. H. F.
Moore.
Mrs. G. W. Pendergrass, pro-
gram chairman and master of
ceremonies, listed several factors
leading to recent marvelous
achievements in garden growth,
by members of the club.
Mrs. Fred Duncan's report re-
ceived first prize. Tn her efforts
to keep up with the neighbors,
she planned something unusual,
a banana plantation. With Mr
Duncan's help, she planted this
in the back yard. When the heavy
rains came the plants became so
green and lush, and grew so rap-
idly they could only view the
trees from the walk. Tt was too
dense to enter. One morning they
heard a baby cry and looking
out, saw a dim light down in the
plantation. They rushed out,
hacking their way inland, and fi-
nally met a young couple with a
new baby. This Mr. and Mrs
John Doe hastily explained they
were intruders only because of
the housing shortage in Wylie.
They had moved all their
household equipment and lived
there happily for the past four
weeks. The Duncans immediately
invited them to stay on and help
eat the luscious fruit.
Mrs. H. J. Corder, second prize
winner, planted hundreds of Iris,
Gladioli and Roses that grew 15-
inch blooms. All this brought
tourists and a big sale of cut
flowers. This encouraged her to
plant more flowers and in her
rich hillside soil they grew over-
night. Now she is trying for 17-
inch gladioli and 20-inch iris. By
crossing the two, she will have
Glad Iris and become very rich
in selling them.
Third place winner, Mrs. Frank
Hooper's entry, was written by
Mr. Hooper. lie listed several
items, such as a well seasoned
post and wire fence which had
sprouted and grew perfectly
square, as the posts had been
sawed. She did some hybridizing
and produced enough cantaloupes
off of plain old Bois D'Arc trees
to pay off the mortgage.
Mrs. Hooper's most extraordi-
nary accomplishment, however,
was to record the language of her
flowers. By setting a very sensi-
tive recording machine in the
garden she picked up minute,
staccato-like sounds comparable to
code signals. The recordings were
sent to Washington where they
were entered into huge Univac
machines and decoded. The con-
fidential report showed that the
flowers had said Mrs. Hooper
spent too much time in the gar-
den and was neglecting her hus-
band.
Others reporting the work of
their "green thumb" were Mrs.
Bill Eubank, Mrs. Nelson Laugh-
ery, and Mrs. Bob Richardson.
And since this was the end of
the club year, there was no com-
mittee to check the veracity of
their reports.—Reporter.
