Portugal and Spain re-
portedly was the path taken
by the Kings. Here on the
route of the Magi the Wise
Men are of particular im-
portance in the Andalusian
countries.
Sidewalk shops and ki-
osks offer reproductions for
sale in glittering array —
some of carved wood, some
of papier-mache or pottery.
Today, more sophisti-
cated Americans emulate
these old-world craftsmen.
They make Wise Men, using
cans and plastic foam heads
embellished with bright and
ingenious decorations.
Custom decrees that the
Magi be met on Epiphany
Eve at the edge of town. In
Portugal, young and old go
out that night, carrying a
variety of food for men and
animals. This colorful cara-
van also offers presents
such as artfully arranged
bouquets of dried flowers,
grasses, and feathers, arH
splendid metallic palmet-
tos bound with beads or
mirrors at their centers.
But alas for the welcom-
ing committee, the Magi
always seem to slip into
town by another road. When
the disappointed children
have eaten the goodies and
returned, they are com-
forted by finding the Wise
Men assembled in the vil-
lage church. Then they pa-
rade in with their wonderful
gifts for the wily Kings.

This is a Birthday Week!
To the many of you who
have birthdays at this time
of year, we send "greet-
ings." It usually ends up
with this bunch having no
cake, no present - for it
is combined with Christ-
mas!
Our boss, Truett Smith,
had a birthday the other
day, we found out, but not
through him - not even
his age!
Bob Douthitt is now offi-
cially 14 years old. How
well I remember that date.
We had a very nervous
fiapa on our hands and
t took both Mrs. Douthitt
and myself to help him
select a tie appropriate
to wear to the hospital.
It got so hilarious, that
his mother was forced to
remind him that it was
Gertie that was having the
baby - and soon!
My Uncle Billy Killough
is a perpetual 39 again
this Christmas Eve. My,
how we love that guy.
Our eldest and right hand,
Jeanne Kreymer, came
home from the hospital
25 years ago this Christ-
mas Day to a home filled
with 28 doting "First's."
parents, grandparents,
great grands, plus uncles
and aunts. What a joyful
but tiring day! Everyone
was so thrilled over the
baby that they forgot the
mommy outside.
This day is also the birth-

Mary. His name is Jesus
Christ, the Saviour of the
World. Often He is left
out of His own Birthday
and replaced by a jolly
little guy called Santa.
Let us not replace Him
in our hearts this year.
Joy, Peace and Hap-
piness has He brought to
all believers.
And, to you, our readers,

words are not good enough
to tell you how very much
you have meant to us this

In the flurry of Christ-
mas buying, remember
that books are a lasting
and treasured gift for the
children - especially
when you don't know the
exact sizes. Books also
fare better than most
things when mailed.
Golden Press offers a
variety of inexpensive
titles which include The
Kangaroo With a Hole""Tn
Her Pocket in which Barn-
aby Alexander and Emma
win a trip to Australia
and meet Scatterbrain, a
kangaroo who seems to be
smarter than the average
human.
The Big Tidy-Up proves
to Jennifer that it is better
for her and for everyone
else to be neat.
Never Talk to Strangers
is a beautifully illustrated
book which will help the
littlest ones know who is
a friend.
Who Lives Here has hid-
den answers to questions
such as "Who can live in
a flower?"
