Middie and Elementary
Schools to be Built in Sachse
Sachse Patrol Sgt. Richard Benedict, left, and Investigative Sgt. Eric Reed, right, carry police
equipment into the new Sachse Police Department headquarters at 3185 Sachse Rd. The polics
moved into the new facility, adjacent to the new Sachse Public Library, over the weekend.
The Garland Independent
School District has announc-
ed it will build two schools
simultaneously in Sachse,
and that the buildings and re-
lated facilities will be ready
for the 1992 school year.
"The dual projects, for a
middle school and a compan-
ion elementary school, are on
a 'fast track' completion
schedule. Both will be finished
by August of next year," said
Mayor Larry Holden.
"We are extremely pleased
about the schools. They
definitely will be a shot in the
arm to development and
growth in Sachse, while pro-
viding children in the area
with a first-class place to
learn," he said.
The schools, B.G. Hudson
Middle School and an ele-
mentary school yet to be
named, will face each other
and will be located on a prev-
iously-purchased site on Miles
Road, just north of where
Miles Road intersects Pleas-
ant Valley. The schools will be
separated by a wide boule-
vard.
B.G. Hudson Middle School
will accomodate 1,050 stu-
dents. The building will have
120,000 square feet, including
a cafeteria/auditorium, band
hall, shop, two gymnasiums, a
computer lab, and a
homemaking lab.
"When completed, it should
mean approximately 2,000 in-
dividuals will be in and out of
the school on a daily basis,"
said Marvin Rhoden, who is in
charge of the construction
program for GISD.
The elementary school will
have 70,000 square feet and
will accomodat 850 students.
It will have one gymnasium
and a cafeteria/auditorium.
"The elementary school will
be patterned after Abbett El-
ementary, and the middle
school will be like the Charlie
R. Lyles Middle School,"
Rhoden said.
Because of GISD's freedom-
of-choice policy, the two
schools are expected to draw
students from throughout the
district, which covers approx-
imately 100 square miles.
"Naturally, we anticipate a
large number of Sachse stu-
dents at both schools. We felt
another elementary school
was needed in the area as(
Luna Elementary is at capa-
city," Rhoden said.
"Of course, there will have to
be adjustments in bus routes
when the new schools are
opened," he added.
Holden said the City of
Sachse will have to extend
adequate water lines to the
site and upgrade Miles Road
"The road upgrade will include
resurfacing and adding an
extensive turn lane in front of
the schools, so that traffic
can continue flowing while
buses and cars are entering
and leaving the school,"
Holden said.
The GISD board of trustees
recently sold bonds totaling
$9.45 million for B.G. Hudson
Middle School, and $5.6
million for the elementary
school, with $300,000 allo-
cated for off-site utilities.
GISD said the schools are
needed in Sachse to handle a
projected enrollment boom in
the area
Sachse and GISD repre-
sentatives are studying a
35-acre city-owned park site
adjacent to the schools. It is
hoped the park can be jointly
developed by GISD and
Sachse, with approval of the
facilities' layout by Garland,
as per a previous agreement
between Sachse and Garland.
GISD also owns another
school site in Sachse, desig-
nated for an elementary
school, at the corner of Bailey
Road and Sachse Road.
