Go-Getters
(Continued from page 1)
While Schwenk is the pri-
mary driver, she has two
back-up drivers: Linda John-
son and Diana Smith.
The van is parked on the lot
of the new Sachse Public Lib-
rary, whose lighting also was
partly supplied by a grant
from the Agency on Aging.
"Wherever we go, we stop,
eat and have a good time. We
move at a slow place and I al-
ways check ahead with the
Chambers of Commerce, get-
ting information. Many of
these places I haven't been
to, so I have to get my map
out to be sure where we're'
going," Schwenk laughed.
"When checking in advance,
I always tell people we're a
group of senior citizens and
we want something nice, but
at a reasonable price. We
then call ahead with reserva-
tions, whether it be for over-
night accomodations or
meals. We have set prices, so
everyone will know what it will
cost in advance," she said.
(The average cost for a day
trip, including gas for the van,
meal, and tickets is $12 per
person).
The Go-Getters have been
given tickets through
Artreach for plays and music-
als at the Dallas Theater
Center, Dallas Reperatory

At the end of the year, a

participants.
The Sachse group is par-
ticularly proud of the fact that
the American Association of
Retired Persons (AARP) IN
Washington, DC, used Luna
children and Go-Getters for a
video to be distributed nation-
wide.
"Our by-laws call for us to
support the Sachse Library
and we have been active par-
ticipants in all fundraising ef-
forts," Schwenk said.
Part of this could be attrib-
uted to Rosanne Burgess,
who for two years as Sachse
librarian, helped make the
Go-Getters a success.
"She was invaluable the first
two years we were in exist-
ance," Schwenk said. Burgess
went on to become librarian
at Wylie, and currently heads
a large library staff at Bay
City.
The Go-Getters have held
bake sales, garage sales, a
"fun run," and other events to
help the library. As a result, a
large table and chairs in the
Community Room were don-
ated to the library.
In 1985, the late Kay Snipes
phoned on behalf of the Luna
PTA and asked the Go-Get-
ters to serve as room mothers
for the school's two bilinqual
classes, as most of the stud-
ents were bussed from other
sections of the Garland Inde-
pendent School District.
"Our first reaction was,
what do we do? We were told
to bake cookies, serve sodas,
cups, and napkins (PTA would
furnish favors) for Valentine
Day and Christmas parties,"
Schwenk said.
"We have been doing it ever
since, although the Naaman
Forest High School language
classes volunteered this year
for the Christmas party," she
said.
And, if you think this group
of senior citizens is ready for
rocking chairs -- forget it!
Just take a trip to the Sachse
Public Library any Monday,
Wednesday or Friday morn-

"If we were paying for these
tickets, some would cost $23-
$27," Schwenk said.
And, while the Go-Getters
spend a lot of time doing
things for themselves, they
do plenty for others!
They started the Foodbank
for needy families in Sachse;
they have for six years served
as home room mothers for
bilingual classes at Luna El-
ementary School; they also
are involved in the Retired
Senior Volunteer Program
(RSVP); they participate
weekly in "Off the Rockers" at
Luna; they maintain the
grounds around the "Welcome
to Sachse" sign on Hwy. 78;
they support all fundraising
activities at the Library; and
they annual nominate a candi-
date from their midst in the
"Grandmother Contest" dur-
ing Sachse Fallfest (member
Cleo Hutson was the 1989
winner).
Ruth Franklin was the Go-
Getter who called the City's
attention to the Food Bank,
where commodities such as
cheese, rice, corn, beans,
cans of pork, etc., are provid-
ed for needy families.
"Ruth found out that some
Sachse families were qualified
for getting commodities in
Garland and she felt that all
needy families in Sachse
should have the opportunity,"
Schwenk said.
As a result of the
Go-Getters' urging, commod-
ities are handed out the first
Wednesday of each month at
City Hall for families who
qualify. The program is not a
function of the Go-Getters.
Eight Go-Getters are in-
volved in the "Off the Rock-
er" program, where they vol-
unteer to help youngsters kin-
dergarten age through the
third grade from 9 a.m.-10
am. every Thursday. These
are children who need a little
more attention than the
teacher can provide and each
student is recommended by
the teacher and a counselor.
Monthly reports are filed by
members as part of the Retir-
ed Seniors Volunteer Pro-
ing.

ed, it means plenty of phone
duty. President Ruth Robinson
heads up that committee, and
is ably assisted by Jeanette
Bontrager, vice president.
"We have a lot of fun and
there's lots to do," said
Schwenk. "We've gone to
.everything from rodeos and
country-western music (Wylie
Opry) to fancy plays to all
kinds of sightseeing trips."
No wonder Sachse Mayor
Larry Holden proclaims the
Sachse Go-Getters the No. 1
senior citizens group in the
metroplex!
