Strong commer-

attended the lunch-
eon featuring

John Harper,
Garland Mayor Ron Jones, Wylie Mayor Eric
Hogue, Murphy Mayor pro tern John
Daugherty and Sachse Mayor Mike Felix
The luncheon was sponsored by Verizon
Communications Inc. t
"This is one of our most popular lunches,"
Sachse Chamber Board Chairman Linda
Gerstner said. "Each mayor or mayor pro tern
gave a very interesting presentation regarding
new and exciting developments in their cities."
The mayor's luncheon was devised to pro-
mote communication and good will between
Sachse and its neighboring communities.
"The feedback we received from all who
attended was tremendous," Chamber Board
Director Stephen Stanley said.
Sachse
Mayor Mike Felix thanked the chamber for
the opportunity to speak. He gave an update
regarding various city projects.
"TxDOT's widening project along Hwy. 78
has made a huge difference in easing the flow
through Sachse," he said. "The additional lanes
are doing the trick to help move the traffic
from Garland into Wylie and beyond to the
north."
Felix said construction was under way for
the President George Bush Turnpike Eastern
Extension.

In a unanimous vote, members of the Sachse
Economic Development Corporation Board of
Directors approved a donation of $1,400 for the
Veterans Memorial.
The request was made by Veterans Memorial
[ Committee Chairman Dave Sanford.
Last month a group of citizens started a
fundraising effort to construct a memorial honoring
all the men and women who have served honorably
in the United States armed forces. The group man-
aged to raise $600 of their $2,000 goal before
approaching the SEDC.
"In some instances economic development
extends to improving the quality of life for the res-
idents of the community," SEDC Executive
Director Carlos Vigil said. "This sponsorship is one
of those quality of life investments that aligns with
the goals and objectives of the SEDC. The memo-
rial is important to have in the community for the
recognition of military veterans."
While stating his case at the SEDC meeting,
Sanford told the board that the fund raising kickoff
for the veterans monument was to start with a booth
at the Sachse fireworks show.

There's no shortage of ways to keep
busy and fit during the summer
months, and several area companies
have made it their business to provide
backup. Some furnish the equipment,
some provide the facilities; all are
dedicated to keeping Wyiie, Sachse
and Murphy moving.

There are also empty netted tunnels
perfect for pitching practice, and golf
enthusiasts can practice their swing in
one of three golf stalls with nets.
Soon, Hockett said, they'll feature a
computer golf simulator.
Everything's "modular," and the
space can be moved around to accom-
modate large groups, games like
dodgeball, clinics or special events.

Wastewater rates due to increase in August
4879 10826
By Patty Montagno

pmontagno @ sachsenews. < om
Beginning with the August water
statement, residential and commercial
customers of the city of Sachse will
see a slight increase for sewer servic-
es.
That will mean that the average res-
idential customer will pay an extra
$2.70 a month.
Commercial customer sewer serv-
ice fees will rise depending on the size
of their meter. A commercial customer
with a 5/8-in. meter will pay an addi-
tional $7 per month.
Council approved the increase dur-
ing the July 6 meeting after discussing
a report from consultant Bob McLain
of McLain Decision and Support
Systems who was hired by the city to
conduct and complete a comprehen-
sive water and wastewater cost of
services study.
This study was completed in May
and council and staff discussed the
report at length during various work-
shops and council meetings.
Finance Director Jeri Rainey said
McLain has assisted the finance
department with its annual review of
rates since 2000.
"A full water and sewer rate study
was completed in 2000 and has been
reviewed annually," she said. "The
last update presented to city council in
2007 indicated that an increase in
rates would be necessary in 2011. This
study confirms this. There has been no
change to the city's water and sewer
rates since 2003."
