Sachse firefighters, elected officials
and members of the community gath-
ered at Fire Station No. 2 Oct. 25 for
the dedication of a life-size bronze
sculpture of a firefighter.
)
The statue was given to the city by
the Sachse Firefighters Association,
Inc.
Firefighter and SFA Secretary Jody
Krizan said the figure is kneeling in
tribute of all the firemen who have lost
their lives as well as emphasizing the
firemen's patriotism.
The 1,600-pound statue was
designed by local artist and Garland
firefighter Nyal Stromberg.
The statue base features the Maltese
Cross and Star of Life symbols as well
as the names of the SFA charter mem-
bers.
"The SFA volunteers have been in
existence for many years and has
raised monies in the past to fund items
that the city was not able to afford for
the fire department," Krizan said.
"These funds helped purchase cloth-
ing, equipment, vehicles and CPR
classes among many other items that
were needed for the success of the
department and the protection of the
citizens."
Krizan said the funds were raised
through community haunted houses,
pancakes wilh Santa and general dona-
lions from the public.

GISD zero-tolerance
policy sends student
to alternative school

A Sachse High School student has
been sent to the Garland ISD
Alternative Education Center after
officials found a knife in her car which
had been parked overnight at the high
school.
According to school officials, a
security guard conducting rounds dis-
covered Ashley Wiener's 1986 Toyota
Camry about 4 a.m. Oct. 23 and
noticed a knife on the floor of the pas-
senger side of the vehicle.
The police were notified and upon
investigation discovered a large, silver-
colored knife with an 11-inch blade.
After retrieving the knife. Sachse
police took Wiener into custody for
questioning based on "possession of an
illegal knife in a weapons free zone."
Ashley told police the knife was a
Halloween prop left in her car by her
boyfriend.
In accordance with the GISD's zero-
tolerance policy. Ashley has been sent
to the alternative education center for
32 days.
The zero-tolerance policy means
there is no tolerance for transgressions,
school officials said. Many schools
have a zero-tolerance policy concern-
ing drugs or w eapons on campus.
According to the GISD Web site,
students enrolled in the AEC attend
eight classes a day including all
required core classes and electives
including physical education, comput-
er technology, health, art therapy, the-
ater arts and career counseling. Daily
advisory classes are mandatory for all
students and cover such topics as trust,
good choices, classroom etiquette,
social skills, gangs, drugs and vio-
lence.
Garland ISD spokesman Reavis
Wortham said the school and district
acted appropriately and followed dis-
trict and state guidelines.
"An illegal item was found, and the
matter is under investigation,"
Wortham said. "The student and par-
ents have had meetings to plead their
case, and another is scheduled for this
week.
"The district is reviewing all the
facts very thoroughly. "We hope a
decision can be reached very soon."
Sachse Police Lt. Marty Cassidy
said the department is also investigat-
ing the case.
"Carrying an unlawful weapon is
considered a Class A misdemeanor,"
Cassidy said. "But because the weapon
was in a weapons-free zone - a school
- it goes to the next level which is a
felony."
Sachse police are compiling a case
to be submitted to the Dallas County
District Attorney's office for determi-
nation. Cassidy said.
"This country has a history of school
violence," he said. "This matter has to
be taken very seriously."
Wylie ISD recently changed their
discipline policy to give school offi-
cials more discretion in this type of sit-
uation.
According to WISD Assistant
Superintendent for Human Resources
and Student Services Dr. Cole
McClendon. the state legislature has
mandated that school districts have a
code of conduct describing the circum
