Murphy voters keep incumbents in office; PfSD voters OK $490M bond
Fomier Councilmember Eric Hogue
defeated incumbent Mayor John Mondy
by a margin of 56.45 to 43.55 percent in
Saturday's election. A total of 700 votes
were cast in favor of Hogue; 540 for
Mondy.
Hogue said he made the decision to
remain positive throughout the campaign
and to focus on the steps that could be
taken to promote and develop the commu-
nity.
"As we now move forward, my goal
will be to represent the citizens of our
community and make decisions that will
be a positive benefit to our city.
"I want to thank Mayor John Mondy for
his phone call on Saturday night, after the
final election numbers came out. He
offered his congratulations and support as
we begin this transition of new leadership
at city hall. I want to thank my campaign
treasurer. Earl Newsom, for his support
and never-ending encouragement."
Mayor John Mondy said he wishes
Hogue much success.
"My congratulations to Eric," he said.
"My wife Sandy and I will be praying for
him and his family and all that they'll have
to go through. 1 want to wish him all the
luck and to tell him I'm here if he needs
me."
The two incumbent Council members,
Rick White and Carter Porter, garnered
more votes than their challengers. For
Place 5, White received 613 votes, 69
more than his opponent Chris Trout. In the
Place 6 contest, Porter had 583 votes, and
Bennie Jones had 531. White defeated
Trout by almost 6 percent; Porter defeated
Jones by 4.66 percent.
The race for Murphy mayor. Place 3
and Place 5 Council seats were all won by
a majority of 75 percent of the vote or
more.
Bret Baldwin was re-elected to his sec-
ond term as mayor with 1,198 or 79.85
percent of votes. Former Murphy City
Manger Craig Sherwood received 268
votes or 18 percent. Although he dropped
out of the race, David Scarborough tal-
lied 32 votes, or 2.15 percent.
With no incumbent for Place 3, John
Daugherty won with 976 votes, 76.97
percent, and challenger Gerry Lington
received 929 or 23.03 percent of votes.
Mike Daniel was re-elected to Place 5
with 1,025 votes or 75.48 percent with
Terry Lynn Stallcup receiving 333, 24.52
percent, votes.
The Murphy Council must officially
canvass the election returns before the
results are official. This canvass will take
place at the Council meeting May 19.
The Piano ISD school bond passed
with 71.57 percent, 6,686 votes, for and
28.43 percent, 2,656 votes, against. The
$490 million proposition plans for a high
school for grades nine and 10 in Murphy
at the PISD complex on Murphy Road. It
also includes a new preschool and middle
school in East Piano.
For PISD trustee, incumbent Brad
Shanklin won Place 4 with 4,456 or
70.21 percent to challenger Robert
Canright's 1,891 (29.79 percent.) Place 5
incumbent Lloyd "Skip" Jenkins won
with 3,098 (47.98 percent) compared to
Michael Mariano's 1,375 (21.29 per-
cent) and David Hall's 1,984 (30.73
percent).

bereavement luncheon
Matt Wads\yorth. a hospice social
worker, will speak on "Remembering
Well" at the Monday, May 19,
bereavement luncheon hosted by the
Visiting Nurse Association of Collin
County.
The luncheon is from 11:30 a.m.
to 12:30 p.m. at the Grand Texan

Retro bowling event to raise
funds for assistance center
A bobby-sox bowling event will
benefit the Assistance Center of
Collin County at the Piano Super
Bowl from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, June
27.
In addition to bowling there will
be a fajita buffet, music, costume
contest, prizes and raffles.
Corporate sponsorships are avail-
able. Lane sponsorships (team of
four) are $300. An individual bowler
can participate for $35.
The Assistance Center responds
to people in crisis with housing, util-
ities, prescriptions, transportation,
food and clothes. More than 17,000
people were helped in 2007.

day, tours planned
The Cemetery Association of
Murphy will have a work day
beginning at 9 a.m. May 24 at the
Decatur-Maxwell Cemetery.
"Bring your sponges, soap, rags
and garbage bags and help clean up
the stones and premises," said Brad
Lapsley, association member.
From 5:30 to 7 p.m. May 30, the
group will take part in a Memorial
Day observance at the cemetery.
The fundraising event will
include tours of the cemetery given
by the Murphy Middle School
Junior Historians, music and
refreshments.
Access to the cemetery is from
Tom Clevenger Road, weather per-
mitting. Otherwise parking will be
behind Murphy Middle School.

The Murphy Chamber of
Commerce will host a networking
luncheon at 11:30 a.m. May 20.

cyclone victims in Myanmar
