In this issue of Scouting, you'll find an 18-page booklet, Drugs: A
Deadly Game. Included in this booklet are resources to aid you in educat-
ing young people on the hazards of drug use.
We in Scouting have long been concerned about the effects of danger-
ous drugs, chiefly their effects on young people. We have a responsibility
to our nation's youth and realize that we cannot sit idly by or lend mere
passive support to the efforts of others. We must take the lead. This urgent
message is directed at young people everywhere, whether or not they are
in Scouting. We are reaching out to the entire community in our efforts.
Drugs: A Deadly Game presents factual medical information in easy-
to-follow formats, but with the unmistakable message that drugs are
harmful to the body and the mind. We recognize that peer pressure is often
a powerful influence in tempting young people to experiment with drugs.
A comic book story, "David's Nightmare," helps readers stand up for
their own convictions and say "no" when pressured by friends.
Additional resources were distributed to local councils, all suitable for
use by schools and other community organizations. These resources
include a teacher's guide, a slide set, a videotape containing testimonials
from role models, a booklet for parents and unit leaders, and information
for conducting a drug abuse awareness rally.
The tragedy of drug abuse must be met head-on. Our youth are our
most precious resource. We must convince them to just say "no" to drugs.
