JUNE THEME
THE WORLD TOMORROW
Summer is arriving this month,
bringing promises of lots of outdoor fun
for Cub Scouts. So as we look at The
World of Tomorrow, we'll be enjoying
the outdoors today.
Den activities will be informal
events, often with parents. The pack's
highlight will be an outdoor fun day,
featuring a space derby for model
rockets built by the Cub Scouts and
their parents.
This theme is designed to achieve
Cub Scouting's purposes of:
• Encouraging good sportsmanship
and pride in growing strong in mind and
body.
• Improving understanding within the
family.
o Fostering a sense of personal
achievement by developing new inter-
ests and skills.
© Providing fun and exciting new
things to do.
PLANNING THE PACK ACTIVITY.
The site may be any park or other open
area where there is a space at least 100
feet long for your space derby course.
Plan family fun games as well as the
derby. A sample program is outlined on
page CUB 2 JUN.
The space derby is a series of races by
rubber-band powered, propeller-driven
rocket models built by the boys with
help of their parents. The rockets travel
suspended from a taut fish line.
Begin planning by ordering a derby
kit for each boy from your Scout dis-
tributor. They are available in eight-
packs (Supply No. 1695) and in in-
dividual kits (No. 1694).
Each kit includes instructions for
pen Space ship ceremony
building the rocket. In each eight-pack,
there are also instructions for building a
launch rack.
Full details for conducting the derby
are on pages 45-46 of Cub Scout Activi-
ties. Also there you will find sugges-
tions for derby committees.
Be sure that derby kits are in the
hands of the boys a month before the
derby so they and their parents will
have plenty of time to build their
rockets.
If you plan to have a picnic or wiener
roast after the derby, name a committee
of parents to plan for it.
DEN ACTIVITIES
With the coming of summer, it's time
to put away your Weekly Den Meeting
Program planning sheets and have
some relaxed, informal den activities.
Call on your parents to plaii and con-
duct them.
Schedule den activities for early
evenings and Saturday mornings so
parents can be there.
Because building the space derby
models is a parent-son project, no work
should be done on them during den
activities, except that you might have a
parent-son den activity specifically to
build the models. Make special ar-
rangements to assist one-parent
families if they need it.
Here are suggested den activities.
Activity 1—Have a parent-son trip to a
destination related to "The World
Tomorrow." It might be a NASA in-
stallation. space museum, or computer
operation. If this is not practical, visit
an airport. Make advance arrangements
for a tour or, at an airport, for seeing the
pilot's cabin in an airliner.
Activity 2—Have a parent-son evening
of building their space derby rockets.
Try the Space Experiments on page
CUB 2 JUN. Remind boys to fly the flag
at home on Flag Day. June 14.
Activity 3—Have a Space Games Day
for parents and sons. See ideas on these
pages. End with a den family wiener
roast.
Activity 4—Have fathers set up a
50-pound test monofilament line
between trees or posts so that Cub
Scouts can test their space derby rock-
ets. Make practice runs and work on
models to improve performance. Make
the Catapult Glider on page CUB 2 JUN
and have contests for distance flying.
Activity 5—Have a den family picnic.
Play Space Games pitting sons against
parents.
