written by 12 outstanding members of
the Overseas Press Club of America,
Stack pole Books (address previously
given), $5.95. Members of the Overseas
Press Club of America were asked to
select the 12 men and women who have
made the greatest contributions in our
century for good in the world. They then
asked distinguished members of the
club who had known these heroes to
write about them. The heroes selected
were Winston Churchill, John F. Ken-
nedy, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Jonas Salk,
Mahatma Gandhi, Eleanor Roosevelt,
Albert Einstein, Pope John XXIII, Dr.
Albert Schweitzer, Harry S Truman,
Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Dag
Hammarskjold. These stories are accom-
panied with a photographic gallery of
the heroes, edited by Cornell Capa.
Story of the Boy Scouts by Wyatt
Blassingame, Garrard Publishing Co.,
1607 N. Market Street, Champaign, III.,
61820, $2.32. A history of Boy Scouting
from its unusual beginnings through its
development into an international or-
ganization is written for all Scouts,
would-be-Scouts, and their friends. It is
written in a language that interests boys
through grades four to seven. The pleas-
ures of camping, the fun and forming of
worldwide friendships at jamborees, the
work on conservation and community
projects—all are a part of the spirit of
Scouting and are included in this attrac-
tive book. It is illustrated with many
photographs and color pictures, and has
a full-color lithographed cover.
Discovering the Appalachians by
Thomas L. Connelly, Stackpole Books,
address peviously given, $7.95. The Ap-
palachians are 3,000 miles long and
several hundred miles wide. They stretch
from the peaks of Maine to the moun-
tain beauty of Alabama and Georgia. It
is a land of contrasts in terrain, peoples,
and economy. Discovering the Appala-
chians is an all-in-one armchair library
and trip reference that can be a guide for
hikers, campers, motorists, troops, posts,
and others seeking to learn more and get
greater enjoyment from these interesting
old mountains. The author is a native
son who has for many years tramped,
motored, and camped up and down these
mountains from Maine to Alabama. His
research, personal knowledge, and ap-
preciation of this vast area are clearly
transmitted here for all who would join
him in Discovering the Appalachians.
Trees of North America by C. Frank
Brockman, illustrated by Rebecca Mer-
rilees, Golden Press, 850 Third Avenue,
New York, N.Y. 10022, $2.95. Another
excellent reference for any Scout library
and a companion book to Birds of North
America reviewed in these columns
(May-June 1967). It is a field guide to
the major native and introduced species
north of Mexico. In total, it includes
more than 730 species in 76 families. To
make the book most useful in the field,
the text, range maps, and illustrations
have been brought together so that all
pertinent information can be seen at a
glance. □
