ON A SCALER
ONE TO TEN ^
Kerry Felton zooms down a zip wire leading from the
giant live oak dubbed "Goliath" by Troop 10.
For several years now, the
members of Troop 10, First Baptist
Church of Pensacola, Fla., have
been conquering Goliath as a regu-
lar challenge. New Scouts find him
quite formidable. With a little encouragement
from the old-timers, however, they soon agree to
go one-on-one against the giant.
Goliath, an ancient live oak, lives in the woods
behind the home of Troop 10's Scoutmaster,
Frank Hamilton. The tree is 45 feet tall and from
tip to tip, its branches span more than 100 feet.
The only way you can truly experience the
challenge of Goliath is to secure yourself safely in
the sling which hangs from a pulley at the lower
end of his extended reach. Once secured, your
fellow Scouts pull you up the cable incline until
Goliath's leafy fingertips start to tickle your neck.
With suppressed fear and great excitement, you
swallow the lump in your throat and yell, "Ge-
ronimo!" That instant, you are separated from
the pull of your fellow Scouts. On your own, you
begin the Goliath Challenge, a breathtaking ride
down a 300-foot-long cable.
Troop 10 members have long wondered how
they might preserve the excitement of their Goli-
ath adventure. Two new giants have now made
that possible, the video recorder and the VCR
