Green Bar Bill's Patrol Corner
A CHAMPION OF THE PA-
trol method as one of Scout-
ing's primary tools, the late
William Hillcourt was known
to thousands across the country as
"Green Bar Bill."
Program ideas for improving team-
work and leadership within a Scout
patrol will appear periodically in
Scouting magazine. Mail your sugges-
tions to Green Bar Bill's Patrol Corn-
er, Scouting magazine, 1325 W. Wal-
nut Hill Ln., P.O. Box 152079, Irving,
TX 75015-2079.
Sort Patrols by Colors
To help organize patrol tents, kit-
chen gear, and other equipment, use
paint or tape of different colors for
each patrol. This makes the equip-
ment easier to sort out at
the campsite, during in-
ventory checks, while load-
ing and unloading from
vehicles, and when return-
ing borrowed equipment.
Using colors instead of patrol
names allows Scouts to change the
name of their patrol without affecting
which gear they will use.

Patrol Sketch and Score
A key subject term or phrase is
written on the backs of 3-by-5-inch
index cards. If the subject is citizen-
ship, terms might be "Constitution,"
"Senate," "community service," etc.
Scouts work in patrols. One mem-
| ber from the first group
comes forward and draws
a card. Using a marker
and a large pad of paper
or chalkboard, the Scout
has 30 seconds to draw
clues for his patrol to guess the term
in question. He may not talk, ges-
ture, or write any letters or symbols.
If the patrol hasn't guessed the
term or phrase within 30-seconds,
the other patrols get a chance. The
next patrol gets a turn first; if it fails,
the next tries. Sequence is then
changed in succeeding turns.
A correct answer earns the team
one point. Play continues for a cer-
tain time limit or score total.
