to the sprawling Southern California
megalopolis, would its most signifi-
cant values be compromised?
Many of our Scouts who had hiked
in Point Mugu were especially upset
that the plans called for a motorcycle
area in the La Jolla Valley, with the
accompanying noise and land de-
struction. They were also afraid that
extra automobile traffic through Point
Mugu would lead to pollution of the
crisp, clean air.
Arming ourselves with topograph-
ical maps and copies of the develop-
ment plans, we hiked a 12-mile route
through the Mugu area. Verdict: It
was too beautiful and rich in natural
values to be "intensively developed."
When one Scout said he was against
such development as long as mini-
bikes were allowed, he was reminded
to stop pushing "his own thing" and
look at the best use for the whole
area.
Deciding to try keeping Point Mugu
in its natural state, the troop attended
a public hearing on development
plans in Oxnard. Speaking for the
troop, Senior Patrol Leader Steven
Maurer said, "If man invades this
territory at a large rate per day, the
scene will be much like a city. Most
animal and native life will vanish.
The clean air will be filled with car
exhaust; the quiet will be broken by
the roar of motorcycles; migratory
waterfowl will have nowhere to rest
in peace."
The 300 citizens who heard him
gave Steve a standing ovation. Two
State Parks and Recreation commis-
sioners were so impressed that they
invited him and the other Scouts to
repeat the testimony at a full com-
mission hearing in Palm Springs.
Steve continued his work, even build-
ing up courage to speak before 100
ladies of his church parish. He
showed slides and urged people to
write government officials about the
proposed development plans.
Other Scouts collected Mugu news-
clippings and literature and talked
about the problems with patents and
friends. Realizing that one conserva-
tion goal is to educate the public,
our troop leaders' council decided
to get more Santa Monica citizens
involved in preserving Point Mugu
and the local environment.
The Scouts set up an "ecological
suggestion box" on the Santa Monica
Mall. Its dual purpose: to give out
i literature about Mugu and other en-
