Soil testing cartons
We have some small waxed soil
sampling cartons and a larger
self-addressed box for mailing soil
samples to the Soil Testing Lab-
oratory, Texas A soil test
cost $1 per sample.
These cartons arc free for the
asking. Joyce Layne, who runs
the Wayside store, requested some
to pass out to farmers in that
area. Recently I took a supply
to him.
Wayside
A big building spree has been
going on in this community that
seems to be going unnoticed.
Over a year ago the Happy Wheat
Glowers, a coop, put in an eleva-
tor in Wayside. Since then Har-
mon Tooles has put in a unit a
mile west of Wayside and Parker-
Whitlow has put in an elevator-
cattle feeding operation combin-
ation. The cattle feeding pens
have a concrcte floor and feed
bunkers. Two of the A. O. Smith
Harvester systems were install-
ed. These units are glass lined
upright silo systems. They are so
constructed that one can store
grain with unlimited moisture.
Fact is a 22% moisture content
is desired. During periods of tem-
perature fluctation the Harves-
tore can expell any gas built up
but cannot take in outside air.
Parker now has 500 head of
cattle on feed and plans to add
units for handling multiples of
500 head in the future. The sys-
tem is a push button affair with
little or no manual labor required
4-11 Achievement program
An exceptionally nice 4-H pro-
grain was held at Fairview on
Monday, Dec. 1. It was the An-
nual Achievement Program.
A special article appears In
this issue. Mrs. Henry Ford
bought the drinks for the group
at the end of the program. Al-
though the 4-H Club boys have
a policy of never soliciting dona-
tions for the operation of their
program, someone like Mrs. Henry
Ford is forever making a nice
contribution of which the 4-H
Club boys are very grateful.

greenbugs on their wheat.
Actually an inspection by ail
entomologist labeled them some
kind of root aphid. Greenbugs are
aphids and are very, very simi-
liar. The strange thing about the
bugs that are on the Patching
place is the fact they are work-
ing on the crown roots. There is
no doubt but what they are do-
ing considerable damage but
ther6 isn't, a thing you can do
about it.
Beef cattle improvement
I note that Bert Wooldridge Jr.
had a pen of three bulls in the
PanTcch Bull Testing program.
A progress report for the first
28 days shows that Bert's bulls
stood in the upper 25% in gaining
ability based on weight per day
of age. A sale will be held at
the end of the feeding period.

Wheat pasture poisoning
A note from Dr. H. R. Crook-
shank, Pan Tech Farm, advises
that in exchange for blood sam-
ples from cows having wheat pas-
ture poisoning they will treat the
animal free. A charge of 75c per
bottle is made for the medicine
used. A collect call to Crookshank
at phone number DRake 2-4035
will be accepted. In the past they
have had calls on various types
of illness in cattle that is not
wheat poisoning. Remember this
can occur only in sexually mature
females. It is most common in
cows that have been on wheat
pasture at least 56 days and have
new born calves.
Thanks for the news this week.
We wonder about this...
While his tank was being filled one
customer made this observation: "A
philanthropist is a man who gives a-
way what he should give back."
