designed in the shape of a heart, thus the name, and because of its proximity to
Booker is often referdred to as the Booker Cemetery.
Walter John was the official caretaker for the cemetery for many years, with
assistance from Harry and Aileen Mitchell.
In 1968, over three hundred evergreens were planted around the outside
perimeter (on land belonging to the Mitchells) to enhance the beauty and serenity
of this resting place for our loved ones.
There are 69 Veterans buried at Heart Cemetery. Three of these veterans are
veterans of World War I. Dean Cames of Booker has placed flags on all veteran
graves at Heart Cemetery for many years.
A Park & Cemetery Board was formed in April. 1966 to oversee the operation
of Heart Cemetery with F. S. Robertson, Harry Mitchell, Walter John, Beverly Lehman
and Edra Bowdle as members. This board was disolved May 26,1976, leaving
the operation under the direction of the City Council of the City of Booker.
There is a brick fence on the East Side of Heart Cemetery.
The oldest grave at Heart Cemetery is that of Y E Winn, 1911 and then as follows;
Winn, baby, 1912, Edith Harrison, 1919, Betty Garton, 1923, Leola Hedgpeth, 1927,
Max B. Shuey, 1927, John Jehllcka, 1929, R. E. Benty, 1930, Fred Young, 1930,
Delmar Hedgpeth, 1931.
In November, 1991, the City Council adopted Rules and Regulations for Heart
Cemetery, located in Lipscomb County, Texas and owned by the City of Booker.
The City of Booker is the caretaker of Heart Cemetery.
