Madera, California
James Walton Pool was born in Mount Sylvan, Smith County, Texas, 12 March
1869; he died 30 May 1935 in Tatum, Lea County, New Mexico, on his way home to
Texas after a visit with his son, Ray Thomas Pool and his family in California.
He was the second child, first son, of eight children born to John Altman Pool and
Tennessee Stroud. Tennessee was the daughter of A. W. Stroud and Mary Ann Best of
Virginia and Mississippi respectively.
J. W. Pool's siblings were Lula Pool Swann, born 1867; Thomas Alfred, born
1871; Beaulah Pool Moore, born 1874; Bonnie Pool Barnes, born 1875; Charles Claud,
born 1876; Hubert J., born 1883; Tiny (Tennessee?) Lane, born 1885. He also had
five half brothers and sisters by his father's second wife, Angie MaGhee: Ivy
Pool McCoy, born 1887; Willie E., born 1890; John L., born 1892; Everett Levi,
born 1895; Era Pool Jenkins, born 1898.
Thomas F. Pool, grandfather of James Walton Pool, moved with his family to
the Red Springs/Sand Flat community in about 1855. By 1866 they moved to the
Mount Sylvan community where three generations farmed berries, peaches and a
variety of other fruits, packed and shipped from Lindale in the vicinity of Wood
Springs.
James Walton Pool married lone Ethleen Boaz, 1 December 1892 in Smith County,
Texas. Ione was the daughter of Thomas Benton Boaz and Sarah Jane Thompson. She
was born 19 August 1873 in Lindale, Texas. To this union was born four children:
Malcolm Boyd, born 1893; Ray Thomas, born 1896; Annie Pool Bibby James, born 1897;
and Gertrude Pool Thompson, born 1910 (the only living child). Malcolm married
Lorena Harned and had two children: Malcolm, Jr. and daughter ... no more is known
about this family. Ray Thomas married Ethe "Faye" Patterson, 26 August 1915 in
Wood County, Texas. To this union there were five children: Boyd Walton, 19271930
who died in a tragic gasoline fire. Ray W., born 1925 married (1) June E. V.
Miller in 1949. Four children: Susan Elaine (Mrs. Doug Hansen), born 1950; her
two children Nathaniel and Wyeth, born 1978 and 1981, respectively; Debra Rae (Mrs.
Rob Hansen, born 1953; Valerie Ann (Mrs. Kevin Gunner), born 1960 and Steven Thomas,
born 1961. On 10 September 1965, Ray W. Pool married Audrey E. Myers Carey, Reno,
Nevada, He inherited three children: Billy Randall Carey, 1954-1973; Jerrianne
(Mrs. Fred Donovan), born 1955; Kimberlie Gaye (Mrs. Charles Owens, born 1959 and
