EAST TEXAS FAHILY RECORDS VOL. 13, NHO 2, SUMMER 1989
The obituary books have been a successful project involving scores of
students, hours of tedious work, and tons of blind devotion by many good people.
Due to other various projects, such as a video documentary of the effects of the
Great Depression on Panola County and a weekly retrospective newspaper column,
and because of the obituary books' continued success with student involvement,
quality workmanship, and community enrichment, Teacher was chosen to receive the
Ottis Lock Endowment Award bestowed annually by the East Texas Historical Association
for excellence in the teaching of history in an East Texas'high school.
As with most awards, there is only one person's name oii it, but ever so
many people responsible for it: the students, ETGS, the community, family,
friends, even the principal, and, of course the voice, Robbie Sutlive.
Sucess of the obituary books is a reward. The Ottis Lock Award is yet
another. However, the greatest commendation is having other people and/or
organizations to follow in our footsteps. ETGS has recently abstracted and
published its own volume of obituaries like ours for Smith County. May others
do as we for their own.
And, by the way, the best of books are written about dead people.
Ann Morris, Teacher
Carthage High School
