PRESIDENT'S PAGE FLE
I want to thank the Executive Board, the Committees, the
County Representatives and the membership for a wonderful 1986!
It is my hope that all of you will work to make 1987 another
year of harmony and achievement.
There are some special people to thank for the extra work
they have done to keep the society healthy. We can't thank Cecil
Cammack enough for keeping the presses rolling and Hughes Ratliff
for the sales of our publications. Martha Glover and Janice Brown
have been my best help in keeping in touch with the Board from a
distance, since I don't live in Tyler. Mathilda Underwood, Ruby
Carr and Flo Hallowell have volunteered their services in other
areas outside of their committee positions many times during the
year. There are many, many others who have always shown real
working spirit and it is these kind of volunteers who make a
president's job much easier.
Nineteen eighty-six was Texas Sesquicentennial year and
although we did not get around to as many projects as we had hoped,
we celebrated as much as any similar group. Most of our programs
were devoted or geared to Texas history, and Betty Kindle, our
newsletter editor, kept us enlightened with her Texas history notes
in The Bulletin.
As we embark on a new year, I hope each of you will show
your willingness to volunteer, even before you are asked to join
the 1987 staff. Twelve positions on the Executive Board are
elective, but there are approximately twenty committee positions
which are filled by appointment. Don't wait to be asked, volunteer
to chair one of these committees. You will be well rewarded with
the satisfaction derived from having served your Society. A strong
organization depends on each and everyone of us doing our part.
My best wishes to the Officers for the New Year, and a
happy holiday season to all!
