That Next-Door Neighbor Of Yours
Shortly after noon one sunny day last week, a young
mother with her four-year-old son dropped into the South-
western Times office to pay for a subscription. When greeted
and asked where he was going, the little boy hesitated before
biting a luscious banana, and beamingly said that he hoped
they were going to the movies. The mother affirmed his
childish hopes and said, "Y'es, we go nearly every day—it
passes the time until the postman comes. I get nervous just
waiting."
The same words uttered in thousand's of homes! Many
women, of course, are in business or keep occupied with Red
Cross and civic doings, but what about that neighbor who
has small children and must stay at home to take care of
them? You say she's busy. True enough, but many are the
hours during the day when she feels all the anguish of wait-
ing—not just waiting for that letter, but waiting for what-
every the day may bring. It's the strain and uncertainty!
You say—so what? Well, there's an answer to this ques-
tion. During these crazy times when the whole world seems
loop-legged, why not turn your eyes to the side for a change
and give thought to being a real neighbor? Remember, these
aren't normal days, and you can do lots of things that you
might not ordinarily do. A friendly chat, a cordial invitation
to visit in your home—any nicety—will do the trick. And,
you'll be surprised what nice people often live next door.
You'll be equally surprised to find how happy you'll be when
you've helped someone who's WAITING to pass the time.
Congratulations to W. M. Mc-
Donald of 3717 Plumb, whose pro-
motion to sergeant of the West
University Place Police Depart-
ment was recently confirmed by
the City Commission. Those new
gold badges and the stripes on your
sleeve surely look fine, Ser-
geant. . . .
