-■ No. 760 of the Appeal to Reason was looked upon by Appeal
iy as the greatest issue since Debs wrote his famous "Arouse Ye
•a,*' article in 1906. Hundreds of thousands of extra copies of
that edition were sold. What caused the immense interest wss the
P brilliant chronological review of the oareer of Teeth Ajar Roosevelt
TroianH ^ ^ t*me wa8 returning ftlMtfihis Africamtrip. i this review
covered twenty-seven years of Mft Roosevelt's political life, and
photographed him in many%ligl^i sad shades that the masses of the
American people had never dreamed of, hence its sensational success >
In the same issue of the Review the scholarly professor Geo. D. Her-
rori wrote a wonderful article entitled 'The Threat of Barbarism.'
In this article Prof. Herron prophesied that Mr. Roosevelt would re-
turn from Africa, the American people'.wonId acclaim him. and that
in J9H2 he? would be nominated foir the presidency, would be elected,
war with Japan would be declared, he would remain in the White
House permanently, set himself ftp as a dictator, the American Re-
public would be doomed, and this Dark Ages would be upon us.
T. A. Hickey opposed Prof. Hcrron's prediction, in an article in
which he eloquently set foHh a number of profound philosophical
reasons why Mr. Rooesvelt could not be elected and that the Republic
would entlttre and expand into the Socialist Co-Opcrative Common-
wealth.
Over two years has passed time this literary duel between Com-
rades Hickey and Herron. In a few weeks we will knowrwhich gen-
tleman was right Prof. HerronVT prtdiction that Roosevelt would
come back and be nominated for the presidency has proved to be cor-
net, and that he has s chance of being elected president is also true,
when wc realize that it is unsnimously conceded that he will beat th<>
present president. So far Prof. Hkron's prediction made over two
years ago seems almost uncanny in its startling correctness. Will
Hickey's prediction of Roosevelt's defeat come true? Or has Prof.
Herron marvelously predicted the future? This is a question that
is now agitating the minds of thinking Socialists in every State in the
Union.
The Rebel has s means at itf| command to enable its thousand*
