The Pedigree of Charity Jefferies Evans Cope
By Carol McGraw Renner
Our family histories are big picture puzzles. As each of us contribute our
research piece by piece, we eventually get the complete family picture. By chance, I
am able to contribute another piece of family picture puzzle to Brenda B. Kellow's
Jefferies-Chandler story published in the June 1995 issue of STIRPES.
Charity Jefferies Evans Cope's second husband, John, was the son of Oliver
Cope. I'm also descended from Oliver Cope through his daughters, Elizabeth Cope
Foulke and Ruth Cope Buffington.
The Jefferies-Chandler pedigree was sent to me by another Cope researcher, It
was not my direct line, so I put it in my Cope file hoping that someone else might find it
useful one day. The Chandler pedigree comes from John Wurt's Magna Charta, Vol.
VII, p. 2285-9. I consider this source a place to begin documentation and confirmtion.
1. Charity Jefferies m. 2nd John Cope, son of Oliver Cope.
2. Jane Chandler m. Robert Jefferies (from England and settled at Bradford,
Chester co., Pa.)
3. George Chandler, b. 1633, died at sea 13 Dec. 1686 on his way to America with
his wife, Jane. Daughter Jane married Robert Jefferies.
4. John Chandler de Oare, baptized 23 Feb. 1602/03. Died 1684. Married first,
Anne, who died in 1633.
5. Thomas Chandler de Oare, b. at Oare in 1570. Church Warden from 16191629.
Buried in Wilcot Churchyard. His will dated 9 June 1629, was proved at
Marlborough 1 Nov. 1630. The inventory shows that he was an exceedingly
wealthy man for those days. He married first at Wilcot Church in 1602, Ann
Downham, who died in 1620.
6. Nicholas Chaundeler (Chandler de Oare) born about 1540, buried 15 Nov.
1604. Married in 1569 to Edythe Spratt.
7. John Chaundeler de Oare, born about 1510, was living in 1544.
8. John Chaundeler de Oare, born about 1480, was living in 1543.
9. John Chaundeler de Oare (Woore) of Wilcot Parish was born about 1450, and
was living in 1525.
10. John Chaundeler, living in 1467, brother of Rev. Thomas Chaundeler, Cannon,
Royal Chapel, Westminister, in the time of King Edward IV.
11. Robert Chaundeler of Devizes, living in 1429.62
