Clothes, tools, silk highlight last 4 shopping sites
By Pat Lidia Jones
I love to get out in the evening
and drive around Albany and ad
mire the beautiful Christmas
lights, twinkling here and there.
Although the bare boned oil field
Christmas trees aren't everyone's
cup of tea, *hey surely are mine.
They are merely OK during the
daylight hours, but when the sun
goes down, they can hold their
own with any conventional tree.
The merchants have gone all
out too, with their tiny white
lights on rooftop and windows. It
may not be Broadway, but it's our
Great White Way.
Some people have all their
shopping completed, but I don't.
If you don't either, panic not; you
can find just about anything your
mind can conjure up, right here in
Albany.
Let's see:
The Hapi Stop
Children's clothes have im
proved so much since my chicks
were small. There is a wide varie
ty of tot's clothing for you to
choose among.
From the gaily painted display
windows of rainbows, sunshine,
and Christmas trees, you know
this will be a Hapi Stop.
One of the first items inside,
that caught my eye was a large
stork proclaiming. "It's a Boy!" or
"It's a Girl!" From Yard Sign
Greetings, you can proclaim to all
the town that the stork has been
to your house; prospective
parents and grandparents, take
note.
A completely outfitted crib
stands ready to welcome a new
child. The sheets, bumpers, and
pillow are all coordinated. A baby
will snuggle warmly in this nest,
while wearing a tiny soft knit
gown and matching receiving
blanket.
The Christmas clothes for our
tiny citizens are dear. They range
from sweat suits to the dressiest
of brother/sister outfits in
Christmas red velveteen trimmed
with white piquet and Santa
Bears.
For the little man of the house.
I liked a grey flannel romper with
a white shirt, piped in red and
green plaid to match the tiny bow
tie.
By the way, all the Christmas
clothing at the Hapi Stop is now
30 percent off the regular price. It
would pay to buy some things for
your child for next year's holi-
days. in a larger size.
Need a very dressy party outfit
for your little darling? The Hapi
Stop has Shirley Temple styled
dresses of satin trimmed in white
lace ruffles. They come in Christ-
mas red or green or sapphire
blue.
If the kiddies have too many
toys already, go in and look at the
clothes selection at Hapi Stop.
Albany Auto Supply
I never feel quite so dumb as
when I go into a shop like this.
Some of the items I am familiar
with, but for each of these, there
are thousands that leave me in
the dark.
I took A.V. with me this time to
shop at the Moore's and see what
he liked. Of course, I knew he'd be
attracted to the display of knives
by The American Blade that fea
ture genuine natural polished
bone handles.
He was impressed also with the
Windshield De leer, plastic tub
ing and chains, and S Hooks
caught my eye.
If your car needs a gift, go into
Albany Auto. Mr. Moore can help
you with all your needs.
The Best of Albany
matched wrench sets and all the
tool kits, especially one called the
Tuff Box, a very sturdy though
light weight box that comes in
several sizes.
This is our car care center.
There are tools, parts, and items
involved in the care and feeding
of our automobiles.
I never drive A.V.'s hunting
wagon; I live in dead terror some
thing awful will happen to it,
while I'm at the wheel. A month
or so ago. I hacked it out of the
garage. Of course. I snagged the
outside rear view mirror on the
stone column of the car port and
broke the mirror all to hits. I
drove straight to Albany Auto.
Within ten minutes, Mr. Moore
had equipped me with an exact
duplicate even to the color of the
pick up, and shortly thereafter.
Talou and I had the replacement
firmly in place. I was more thank
ful for Albany Auto, though I
dread the seven years bad luck a
broken mirror brings.
A.V. looked at the soldering
irons and nylon rope, while the
Local sales tax rebate decreases
State Comptroller Bob Bullock
on Friday sent checks totaling
$57.6 million in local sales tax to
852 cities that levy the one per
cent city tax.
Bullock said this month's alloca
tion showed an increase of $3.3
million over last year's December
allocations, an increase of 6.2 per
cent.
However, statewide year end
totals for the monthly city alloca
tion decreased to $850.7 million
from the 1986 total payment of
$886.3 million. Bullock added.
"The increase in this month's
payments is the result of two fac
tors —statewide economic reco-
very and a widening of the state's
tax base.' Bullock said. "Our
economy is recovering, but it's go-
ing to take some time," he added.
December checks represent
taxes collected in October and
reported by November 20. Oc
tober was the first month that the
broadened tax base went into ef
feet, according to Bullock.
The tax base was widened as a
result of state legislation passed
during last summer's special ses-
sion.
Sales taxes collected in October
in Albany were down from the
same period in 1986— from
$4,748.13 to $4,624.47. The year
to date payments also showed a
decrease of 16.12 percent, down
from $110,434.58 in 1986 to
$92,635.46 in 1987.
In Moran, the year to-date
payments are down 17.57 per
cent —from $4,176.79 in 1986 to
$3,442.97 in 1987.
Stamford received a check for
$9,220.68. down from $9,735.22 for
the same period last year. The
year to-date payments are down
10.00 percent.
The City of Anson's payment
w is in the amount of $4,492.31, up
from the comparable payment in
1986 of $3,251.19 The year to-
date payments in Anson are down
8.90 percent.
A 5.36 percent dec-ease was
seen in Baird in Cailahan County.
Payment this Period was
$1,106.64 in comparison with
$1,383.51 in 1986.
Payment in Breckenrid^e was
up from the 1986 amount from
$24,133.01 to $26,437.89. The year
to-date payments are down 11.28
percent.

Higginbotham-Rartlett
The first thing A.V. called to
mv attention here was Comanche
Gold Peanut Butter in a squeeze
tube. This is Higginhotham's own
brand, and they have the whole
peanuts too.
1 never can find an extension
cord around my house. There are
plenty though at Higginbotham,
even in 50-100 foot lengths, and
heavy duty too.
Plenty of security measures are
available for the added safety of
your home, in the form of dead
bolts and padlocks. And when you
lose the keys, they make keys
here too.
Popular this year among pro
fessional and do-it yourselfer
workmen alike, is the Skil Twist
Cordless Screwdriver It drives
and removes screws with no ef-
fort, and has a recharging unit.
Notable also was a putty pencil,
that comes in all wood tones, for
filling in nail holes in paneling and
wood work.
Then there's a great Hot Glue
Gun. and speaking of ijlue. Higgin
hot ham's has many, many dif
ferent types, something for each
job.
It's the paint and home building
and repair center of town. There
are all kinds of power tools.
Of more use to me were the ter
rific Rayovac Work Horse Flash
lights and lanterns. They are so
dependable. I carry one in my car.
And 1 found power return rules
from 8 to 100 feet long.
Do make a trip to Higgin
botham's for help with your
repair and building and refurbish
ing problems.
Pauline's Custom Designs
Pauline's shop is in her home,
and it is a real treat. There are
beautiful things to admire every
where you look
/ can't kjrow anything. I have a
tendency to put an instant blight
on any plant I befriend.
The answer. 1 guess, is silk
plants and flowers. If you have to
feel of them to tell whether or not
they're real, that's ^ood enough
for me.
Pauline also can order live
plants and flowers for you. She is
marvelous at design and can make
an original one-of a-kind arrange
ment for that special place you
have in mird.
Its not too late to get live
poinsettias to make your home
more Christmasy or for gifting a
friend or your church or a busi-
ness associate.
There are many beautiful
baskets and dried flower ar
rangements, also candles and
grapevine wreaths. Pauline does
lovely cemetery pieces for loved
one remembrances.
She adds many special touches
to her work, such as tiny sachet
hags. She has a hollowed mallard
duck decoy, life-sized, which is so
great for arrangements for men.
1 loved the natural finish heart
shaped solid wooden dishes.
And perhaps my favorite
things were the Christmas red
lacquered heart shaped wreaths
One would be terrific for Christ
mas, and no less terrific for Yalen
tine's day
Pauline's been at it a long time
and she's good! Go see for
yourselves.
It's been fun shopping Albany
for you —and with you. I've loved
it.
And I wish for you and yours
the happiest and healthiest of all
holidays.
