Historic farm honored
By Winifred Trigg
Special to the Advertiser
On Friday, January 21 the
Texas Department of Agricul-
ture will add another property to
the Family Land Heritage Pro-
gram.
The Hubbard Farm, founded
in 1850 has met the require-
ments and will be recognized at
that time.
- The owners are Virginia H.
Wright, Jane Wright and Sandra
Kibby.
The ceremony will be at 2
p.m. at the L.B.J. Library Au-
ditorium.
The Family Land Heritage
Program is assigned to honor,
those farms and ranches which
have been in continuous agri-
cultural production at the hands
of one family for 100 years or
more.
Mere ownership of the land
for that period of time will not
qualify owners for the program.
The Department of Agriculture
is seeking to honor those farms
and ranches whose history of
agricultural productivity has
been continuous and uninter-
rupted for a century or more.
There are 42 individuals in
Bastrop County who have been
given a certificate in the name
of land and listed in the Family
Land Heritage Program.
Applications for the Family
Land Heritage Program are
available at the Bastrop County
A.S.C.S. office.
If you have a high school
diploma or a GED you are
qualified to train as a Basic
Reading tutor.
An informational orientation
is scheduled for 2 p.m. January
27, at the Bastrop Library
meeting room. Attendance at the
orientation does not obligate
you to become a tutor. Its pur-
pose is to help you decide.
There are people who want to
learn to read waiting to be tu-
tored. If you are interested in
becoming a tutor but cannot
come to this meetings, let LVA
know and they \$ill schedule
another time.

FmHA offers conservation plans
"Farmers with loans from the
U.S. Department of Agricul-
ture's Farmers Home Adriiinis-
tration (FmHA) may be able to
put flood-damaged land under
conservation easements in ex-
change for a reduction in their
debt," said George Ellis, FmHA
State Director.
Use of the easements is not
limited to flood areas, but it may
be particularly helpful in such
areas, said officials.
"Eligible lands may include
wetlands, marginal farmland,
highly erodible land, woodland,
wildlife areas and several oth-
ers," Ellis said. "In certain ar-
eas, there may be instances
where farmland was damaged
so severely by the recent flood-
ing that restoring it may cost
more than its agricultural value.
In those cases, a conservation
easement may be a solution.
Under this program, a voluntary
easement can be placed on a
portion of the land in return for
a reduction in the amount owed
to FmHA."
Ellis said the easements are
for 50 years or more and can
help rebuild soil conditions as
well as encourage development
of wildlife habitat.
"Not only can FmHA farm
borrowers take marginal acreage
out of production in this way,
they also can materially reduce
their farm operating costs," Ellis
said.
Fanners who think they may
be eligible should contact the
local FmHA County Office for
further information.

Church erecting crosses
to protest abortion rule
Grace Lutheran Church on
U.S. 290 in Elgin will mark
Sanctity of Life on Sunday,
January 16, by building and
placing 4500 white crosses in
cemetery fashion on the church
grounds in Elgin.
Each cross represents one
unborn baby's life lost in abor-
tion. Approximately 4500 abor-
tions are performed each and
every day through the United
States, said Reverend Bryan
Sullivan.
"Grace Lutheran wants to
impress on people the magni-
tude of the number of deaths
since Roe V Wade legalized
abortion on demand through the
full nine months of pregnancy,"
said Rev. Sullivan, "Women in
crisis pregnancies need to know
there are compassionate people
out there who will help them
make a better choice."
Members of all ages started
working on the project in late
summer by raising money and
gathering volunteers to cut,
paint and assemble the crosses.
One six-year-old was thrilled
when she found enough change
under sofa cushions to fund a
cross.
The ^crosses will be put in
place on Saturday, January 15
and remain up for one month.
"We invite you to our ser-
vices beginning at 8 a.m. and
again at 10:30 a.m. January 16,"
said Rev. Sullivan. "Wc will
celebrate the sanctity of all hu-
man life."

member of the Lutheran Church
Missouri Synod.

songbirds," John Rosenow, the
Foundation's executive director,
said
The trees will be shipped
postpaid at the right time for
planting between February 1
and May 31 with enclosed
