Reflections...
It's Holiday time at home (I think), with the dining room
table . . . loads of food . . . apple pie . .. turkey, ham, goose;..
One box of K-rations ... with the notorious ham/cheese thing
and lemonade ...
Then settle down on the couch after dinner ... if I get there
before Pop . . . listen to the radio broadcast. .. football game?
Get into the sleeping bag ... on top deck of the tank . . .
motor just warm enough to tease ... not really hot enough ...
pity the infantry for not even having that ...
Fun hiding the presents for Mom and Dad . . . hope he likes
the tie . . . all I could handle on my allowance . . . sure hope
Mary likes the locket . . . when I get through with school and
get myself a job and maybe it'll be a ring... if she 11 have me...
Wonder if we'll get any Christmas packages ... I'd even
settle for Grandma's horrible fruit cake ...
Gonna go ice-skating this afternoon . . . hope Mary is ready
on time . . . hate waiting for her . . . though it's OK when she
does show up ... so darn pretty . . .
Frost on my sleeping bag ... and my nose ... feet are so cold
I almost can't feel 'em ...
One good thing about Holiday dinners . . . seems there's
always leftovers . . . ain't nothin' better than a cold ham
sandwich . . . and that pie . . .
On my last K-ration . . . hope they bring up some more to-
night ... but chances are they'll have lots of ammo ... and gas
. . . and no food ...
Got to get ready for church . . . means best bib and tucker
. . . hate those ties . . . like seeing all my friends . . . just as
miserable as me ... I'd better be good this year . . . Mom and
Dad don't take kindly to me and Pete whispering during the
sermon . . .
Heard there's going to be services in that bombed-out
church at the end of town . . . some Chaplain . . . it's the first
time any one from the rear echelon found their way to the
front ...
And it'll be a long one . . . the Reverend don't hold with
letting us off easy . . . never sure what particular sin I com-
mitted . . . but he sure can worry me . . .
Are we going to hear all about sin? . .. sure is a lot of it out
here ... especially when you realize killing is the biggest sin of
all . . .
Hope my parents don't worry a lot about me . . . sure
wouldn't help much ... I'm about as safe out here as I might
be somewhere else . . . like the Pacific . . . not that there's any
"safe" place during a war . . . but I got friends ... all around
me . . . and weapons . . . and somebody up there must like me
... I'm still here . . . too many of our guys are not . . . don't
know how many of my school buddies are still around . . . how
many enlisted or were drafted . . . and how many are still alive
Guess I'll creep and crawl over to that church ... it can't
hurt me . . . they say he's either a Catholic ... or a Methodist
. . . not sure I care .. . these days it doesn't seem to matter as
much as it might back home . . .
I can remember when a new sect bought a church downtown
. . . everyone was real excited . . . and angry . . . never did
understand why . . . what were they worried about? . .. always
thought the Lord spoke all languages . . .
Funny thing about the service ... we all sat on the ground ...
helmets and weapons next to us . . . his sermon was short . . .
and to the point . .. then I thought he was nuts altogether ...
asked us to put our helmets back on ... said something about a
prayer for the dead ... for our Jewish GIs ... then he delivered
what I suppose was a prayer ... in what they told me was
Hebrew ...
Be glad when this is all over ... Boy, am I homesick ... can't
wait to get back to the "old grind" .. . don't seem so bad right
now . . .
