Details about the Albany Arts
Festival and second annual Car
Show were announced this week
by event coordinators.
The 2006 Arts Festival will
take place in downtown Albany,
with a two-day art show on Sat-
urday and Sunday, and the side-
walk fair itself throughout the
day on Saturday. The date was
set in conjunction with a Studio
13 art event, as well as the Fort
Griffin Fandangle Membership
Party Saturday night.
Registration forms have been
sent out to known vendors to
bring their handcrafted items to
Albany for the day, and local
nonprofit organizations have
been invited to set up booths
free of charge.
Auto Show
According to Chamber of
Commerce manager Chuck
Senter, all local and area resi-
dents are invited to enter the
second annual Car Show.
There will be no specific divi-
sions for the informal contest,
which is open to antique cars
and trucks, "hot rods," and all/
types of customized vehicles.
"If you've got a car or truck
you're proud of and want to show
off, bring it on down and we'll
display it," said Senter.
South First Street next to the
Bank Park will be cordoned off,
with check-in time set for 9:00
a.m. Auto owners should regis-
ter their vehicles on the north
side of the bank building.
There is no fee to enter the
show, which is scheduled to last
until 1:00 p.m.
Participants themselves will
select the top 10 vehicles. Judg-
ing at 12:00 noon will decide the
winners, which will be an-
nounced at 1:00 p.m.
Other Events
Several nonprofit groups have
signed up for food booths on Sat-
urday, ranging from doughnuts
to barbecue.
And although there haven't
been a great many crafters reg-
ister yet, Chamber director Cara
Richards is hopeful that more
will be on board by next week-
end.
"We got a late start, and quite
a few vendors had already made
plans for that weekend," she
said.
Booth prices start at $25 and
go up to $45, depending on the
size of the booth needed, as well
as other factors, such as electri-
cal needs.
There will be no booth charge
for nonprofit organizations.
The Studio 13 Art Show,
which will be held at the Whitney
Theater, will include a number
of Big Country artists along with
local artists. All the pieces will
be for sale.
For more information or to
register, call the Chamber office
at 762-2525.
2nd concert planned at Old Jail
Two local musicians plus an-
other part-time Albany resident
will be presented in concert on
Sunday afternoon, April 23, the
second in a series of spring mu-
sical events being hosted by the
Old Jail Art Center.
The April 23 event will begin
at 3:00 p.m. in the Stasney Room
and will feature both solo and
ensemble music.
Carmen Chapa of Dallas and
Albany is principal clarinetist
for the Dallas Opera Orchestra.
She is also a member of the Dal-
las Fine Arts Chamber Players
and has played on occasion with
the Dallas Symphony.
Sandy Abel, who has lived in
Albany for the past decade, is a
performer and a teacher of pi-
ano and voice. She and her son
Marc Sanders present annual
piano concerts at the Aztec The-
ater, and she is organist at both
the Matthews Memorial Pres-
byterian Church and Trinity
Episcopal Church.
Vocalist Elsa Williams moved
to Albany several years ago and
has been involved in the local
music scene ever since. She sings
with the Albany Community
Choir, often as a soloists, and
teaches voice lessons. She will
join Abel and Chapa in perform-
ing Franz Schubert's "Shepherd
on the Rock."
There is no charge for the
concert, but reservations are
requested by April 19.
For more information, call the
Old Jail at 762-2269.
The first concert earlier this
month was a performance by

A community blood drive will
take place on Thursday, April
20. The Meek Blood Center
bloodmobile will be parked at
First Baptist Church from 1:00
until 6:00 p.m.
The blood drive on February
23 resulted in 31 pints of blood.
Citizens in communities such as
Albany help save lives of pa-
tients in 17 area hospitals.
Many different types of pa-
tients benefit from donated
blood. A cancer patient under-
going chemotherapy may use six
or more pints of blood during
treatment. An accident or
trauma victim may use as many
as 40 pints of blood while as
little as three teaspoons of blood
can save the life of a premature
baby.
"There is no substitute for
human blood," said Frances
Baker, donor recruiter for Meek
Blood Center. "It is truly the gift
of life that is given from a healthy
person to someone whose life is
dependent on a volunteer blood
donor."
Blood donors must be a mini-
mum of 17 years of age, weigh at
least 110 pounds and in good
health. Those who have ques-
tions regarding donor eligibility
may call Meek Blood Center at
325-670-2798 or visit the web-
site at www.meekbloodcenter.
org.
Each donor will receive a T-
shirt and a free total cholesterol
test. Cholesterol results are
available three days after the
blood drive.
Stock show membership to meet
The annual membership
meeting for the Shackelford
County Youth and livestock
Association has been set for next
Monday, April 17, according to
the board president, Mike Par-
sons.
The session will be held in the
ag building at Albany High
School, located behind the main
gymnasium, starting at 6:00
p.m.
One of the primary items on
the agenda is the election of di-
rectors and officers for the up-
coming year.
Those present will also re-
view the 2006 stock show and
discuss possible rule changes for
the 2007 show. They will also
finalize plans for the Buyer-
Seller Banquet on May 6.
"It's a very important meet-
ing and we hope that everyone
who is interested will be able to
be there," said Parsons.
He added that a voting mem-
ber of the association is defined
as anyone who made a donation
to the most recent show and who
has attended at least half of the
association meetings during the
previous year.
"We encourage everyone who
Hospital
has an interest in the stock show
to come, regardless of whether
they're eligible to vote," said
Parsons. "Suggestions are al-
ways welcome, and that's how
you end up having a vote, by
coming to the meetings."

tact Rocky Vinson at 762-2232
