Varsity Lions lose close district games

The Albany Lions let two district
games slip through the hoop last
week, but Coach Eddie Barker
stated that the team is still very
much in the race for a District 8-2A
play-off spot.
The Lions lost to Bangs 69-63 on
the road Tuesday, January 5, and
were edged out at the last minute
by Ranger 67-65 in the Albany
gym last Friday.
The JV1 .ions also dropped both
of their bouts last week, falling to
Bangs 67-33 and losing to Ranger
43-24.
The varsity boys traveled to
Goldthwaite on Tuesday, January
12, but results of the game were
not available a| press time.
Both the varsity and JV teams
will host San Saba on Friday,
January 15 in the local gym. Games
are Scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m.

Humber hosts ex-teachers
Lena Belle Humber hosted the
January 7 meeting of the Shack-
elford County Retired ^Teachers
Association, assisted by Alexene
Garlitz and Margaret Putnam. The
invocation was given by Eula
Parsons.
President Garlitz presided and
called the meeting to order. Dur-
ing the brief business session
; minutes of the November meeting
: were read-, the treasurer's and
committee reports heard. A
nominating committee was ap-
pointed to select officers for the
next two-year term.
Program Chairman Margaret
Putnam introduced Arthur Lee
Viertel who presented a program
/ of songs and readings. Bette
ij. Walters played the organ accom-
paniment and assisted in singing
a number of well-loved older songs,
including "I've Got a Mansion Over
• the Hilltop." *
Teacher workday to
give students holiday
Local students will be given a
holiday from classes this Friday,
January 15 as teachers prepare
six week and semester grade re-
ports.
Report cards sh owing grades for
the third six weeks period, as well
as for the first semester, will be
distributed at both campuses next
: Thursday, January 21.
Students will get another break
on Friday, February 26, when a
r '**" teacher inservice day is scheduled,
and then classes will dismiss for
spring break March 15-19.
April 9 is a scheduled holiday,
and unless bad weather forces class
dismissals before then, April 16
and May 14 will also be taken as
holidays.

The program chairman intro-
duced Myrna Grigsby, guest
speaker. She gave a talk on in-
vestment planning and discussed
annuities, bonds and mutual
funds, explaining the advantages
and disadvantages of each.,
Refreshments were served to
11 members and three guests.
Lions Lose District Games
The Lions lost to the Bangs.
Dragons on Tuesday, January 5,
despite a strongfinish in the fourth
quarter, the lose dropped the Lions
to 5-11 for the season and 1-1 in
district.
Albany got off to a slow start in
the first quarter trailing 19-12,
pulled up nearly even in the second
period 18-17 to hold BangsMead to
37-29 at the half. The Lions were
cold again in the third quarter,
losing the period 17-8, however,
they came back strong to take the
final frame 26-15.
Shane Terrell was the top scorer
with 20 points, followed by Clint
Chapman with 17 and Joe Farmer
with 10. Juan Rodriguez, Chad
Parsons and Matt Birkla scored
four points each and John Tom
Hcatly and Tom Londerholm put
up two points apiece.
"We just weren't able to dodge a
bad third quarter," said Coach
Barker. "We let them get a lead on
us that we just couldn't come back
from despite a great fourth quar-
ter."
Barker added that he felt that
the Lions were playing to win, but
the clock just ran out too soon.
"Our effortin the fourth quarter
was outstanding. We almost pulled
it out, but you have got to give
Bangs credit — they played good
enough to win."
The Lions hit 40.7 percent from
the floor and 73.8 percent at the
free throw 1 ine'. Farmer also put up
two three-pointers for the team.
Named as offensive standouts
were Terrell, Chapman and
Farmer, while Rodriguez, Parsons,
Londerholm, Farmer, Birkla,
Heatly, Terrell and Chapman were
praised for their defensive efforts.
"We're still going, to make a
strong run at the playoffs - there is
still a lot of basketball to play."
The Lions got off to a slow start
while hosting Ranger on Friday
night, losing the bout 67-65 with a
shot in the air at the buzzer.
Albany was behind 25-12 at the
endofthe first period, and although
they won the remaining three pe-
riods the Lions were two points
short at the end of the game.
Albany look the second period
33 18, knotted the third 9-9, and
won the final quarter 21-15.
"It was another game that we
just dug a little too deep of a hole to
get out of," said Barker. "We had a
couple of slow streaks in each half
when we didn't score for two to
three minutes.".
Shane Terrell put up 27 points
for the Lions, including a three-
pointer, followed closely by Clint
Chapman with 26 points.
Matt Birkla and Joe Farmer hit
for four points each, along with two
each by Tom Londerholm and John
Torn Heatly.
"We knew that Ranger was go-
ing to shoot the three-point shot,

but we just weren't able to keep
them from shooting it at tfte right
time. Even with all that we had our
chances"
The Lions shot40.3 percent from
the floor and 47.1 percent from the
charity line.
"The only part of the game 1 was
disappointed in was our free
throws. This is the first time in
probably 10 games that we didn't
'win' that part of the game,"
The coach named Terrell and
Chapman as offensive standouts,
while Heatly, Terrell, Chapman,
Rodriguez and Pars'ons received
praise for their defensive work on
the court.
"These guys played really hard
and refused to quit even when they
were pretty far .behind. We have to
just get off to a better start and
we'll be okay. There are still 10
district games to play and we are
definitely still in the district race."
The Lions will travel to Dublin
on Tuesday, January 19 and host
DeLeori on Friday, January 22.
JV Still Searching For Win
The JV Lions dropped to 0-3 in
district play last week with losses
to Bangs and Ranger.
The Lions started slow against
Bangs and were never able to,re-
cover, losing 67-33,
Bangs took the first period 18-6,
but it was Albany on top of the
second period, 11-10. Bangs came
"out in the second half to score 22
points in the third and 17 in the
fourth. The Lions managed four
points in the third period and 12 in
the final frame.
"You could definitely tell that
this was our first game back afler
the holidays. You could plsotell we
were a little out of shape," said
Barker. "But we never quit and the
guys should be commended for
that."
Corey Await was the leading
scorer with eight points, along with
six each by Bryan Gillit and Jody
Brown. David Smith and Stephen
Bartee scored five points each, and
Brian Rose hit for three points. .
Brown, Smith and Bartee all
scored on a three-pointer each.
The JV didn't fare any better
when they hosted Ranger last
Friday, losing 43-24.
Ranger led 6-2 after the first
quarter and 19-11 at the half. The
Bulldogs took the third period 11-7
and finished the game with a 13-6
final quarter.

"These kids iust need to get ac-
customed to playing basketball,"
said Barker. "The^ talent is there,
but they are down to justpix players
and are going to have to learn to
play when they are tired."
Offensive standouts were Bar-
tee, Gillit and Rose, while Smith,
Giilit, Bartee and Brown were
named as defensive standouts.
The JV will host San Saba on
Friday, January 15startingat5:00
