AHS band plays Rotunda concert
Around 75 Albany High
School band members and more
than a dozen sponsors traveled
to Austin and San Antonio May
5-7.
The trip included a concert in
the Capitol Rotunda, and sight-
seeing in both cities.
The group left Albany at 5:45
on Thursday morning, May 5
and stopped for doughnuts and
breakfast drinks at the Lam-
pasas City Park.
After arriving at the Capitol
in Austin at 11:30 a.m., the
musicians unloaded their trailer
and set up for their concert in
the Rotunda. They then per-
formed a 30-minute program
that was well received by those
who were walking through the
area, according to one of the
sponsors, Karen Noble.
Robert Echols drove to Aus-
tin for the day to read a letter
written during the Civil War
while the band played a selec-
tion called "The Ashoken Fare-
well." The piece and letter were
originally part of a PSB series
about the Civil War.
Rep. Jim Keffer had invited
the band to Austin and had ar-
ranged for their performance.
Since the Legislature was in ses-
sion, Rep. Keffer was unable to
be present at the concert, but his
secretary attended and was very
complimentary of the group's
efforts, said Noble.
After their program, the group
loaded up again, ate lunch in the
Bob Bullock State Historical
Museum Cafe and then toured
the museum.
They later made a stop in
New Braunfels for dinner and
traveled on to San Antonio.
While in San Antonio, the stu-
dents and their sponsors divided
their times between shopping,
sightseeing and swimming. They
walked to the King William His-
toric District for the First Fri-
day Arts Festival and visited
Market Square.
The buses left San Antonio
Saturday morning, Stopping for
a sandwich lunch at Richards
Park in Brady. After that, one
bus detoured to Abilene to Watch
the second game of the bi-dis-
trict baseball playoff between
Albany and Rotan. The other
two buses arrived back in Al-
bany around 3:00 p.m.
In addition to Noble and band
director John Stockdale, spon-
sors included Rick and DeVona
Davis, Andre and Roxanne
Raymond, Danny and Teresa
Peacock, Trumi Wiloth, Kyle and
Sherry Viertel, Lori Schooler and
Shelly Bartee.
The AHS band is made up of
eighth graders through seniors.
