Wednesday, April 17, 1968, about 85 persons of the
city of Abilene heard the pros and cons of the leased
Those speaking against the housing program gave
some of their reasons as: (1) Letting persons rent
from the government will take away self-pride, (2)
This is a program of taking from the pay checks of
some, and giving to the poor, (3) There are "other"
ways of helping the housing of the poor, (4) Persons
should not be moved from one slum only to set up
Persons speaking for the leased housing stated
that: (1) This does not take away from sone and
give to others because the government already owns
the houses, (2) No one has come up with another or
better idea of how to better the housing of the poor,
(3) A slum would not be moved from one place to
another because rules and regulations rust be followed
by the renters, (4) The city will not loose tax
money on the houses since the housing authority is
only leasing houses,
After observing the reaction of the group during
this meeting, and talking to many of the persons after
the meeting, it appears that of the people attendLinh,
over 98% will VOTE "'F 0 R" the housinM program,_
