WHAT is THE CLOSED SHOP
atter another the words closed and
> i d Few people know just what the
l ir a brief news item from Pennsylvania
tells the whole ttory
In a hosiery mill a grou of girls of the Mennonite sect worked
Thislr religion forbade them to join any organization such as a labor
union But their i iant became a closed shop under which those not
belonging to the uuion could not work ihere It meant that the employer
would be compelled t0 discharge these girls and they would
lose their livelihood
The union however had the answer to than Its officials agreed
that if the girls would pay the regular union dues they would not
have to Join And lihat is the story
In the final showdown the union did not care whether they belonged
to the union It wanted nhe titles The closed shop Is a means
by which employees are compelled to pay ov r tax upon each pay
envelope or quit work
o
THESE RISING COSTS
ARE two ways of looking at the rising cost of living One
THEItK optimistic approach which points out that the necessaries
of life still cost less than they did at the peak of the boom in 1020
The pessimistic angle is that costs have been climbing steadily since
the b tom of the depression in 1933
The important fact however is that we have to pay out of our
1037 incomes and the drain on this years pockebook is greater
than it was a year ago The latest report by the U S Department of
Labor showB hat it costs 13 percent more to pay the rent keep the
pantry stocked and buy the UBUal clothes than it did four years ago
and that a quarter of thai increase has come about in the past year
Reuts ha > gone up faster than tood and food faster than clothingThe uuos urn whether Incomes have gone up at an equal or faster
rate Ik something else again There is no question that more people
are on payiolls or otherwise earning a living than there were a
short time ago Riu whether these incomes are as much higher than
the lucomes people received who earned anything at all in the years
of low prices is not so certain
That U what really conn s It is not so important whether pork
chop cost J5 cents a pound or a dollar a pound as whether we are
getting enough dollars to pay whatever they cost If some kind of a
dfMar could be Invented which would always have the same purchasing
power and everybody could be assured of always having enough
of those dollar what a nice place this world would he for everybody
