Eagles withstand Indian rally, win 48-37
Lady Indians' season ends at 23-11 level
By Tracy R. Mesler
DENTON - The Lady
Eagles of Brock used a decisive
advantage in rebounding along
with their equal quickness and
their ability to avoid elimination
fouls to whip the Nocona Lady
Indians 48-37 in Monday's bi-
district play-off game at Billy
Ryan High School in Denton.
Featuring 6-foot Paige
Parliament, 5-11 Rainey White
and 5-10 Kenisha Harris, Brock
totally dominated the Indians in
the first half as the tribe forgot
how to rebound and force the
action.
The tribe had made a living
and won 23 games this year by
pressing their opponents, get-
ting easy points off turnovers,
and using their ability to put
two, three or at times even four
point guards on the floor at a
time to drive and draw fouls.
Monday that did not work.
The Eagles countered with a
pair of quick point guards at all
times to negate that Indian
press. Then used their size to
clog the lane to deny the drives
to the basket, and when Nocona
did shoot, the Eagles got all the
rebounds, or at least it seemed
that way.
The Indians were limited to a
single offensive rebound in the
first that. That came from 5-
foot-4 Kori McConnell who put
the ball back in the hoop after a
missed break-away lay-up.
In fact McConnell accounted
for 5 of Nocona's 14 first half
points as she nailed her only
other shot of the night, a 3-
pointer, earlier in the second
period.
The Indians did a decent job
of holding Parliament in check
(1 of 2 from the floor in the first
half), but Hams proved to be the
thorn in Nocona's side. She
tossed in 6 of her team's 20 first
half points eventually scoring
13 for the evening along with
pulling down 9 rebounds - usu-
ally at critical times.
Brock's defense virtually
eliminated leading scorer
Kristyn Weaver from the
Indians' arsenal holding her to 8
points on the night on 3 of 9
shooting from the floor.
Additionally, Weaver had a
season low in steals with two
and no assists.
Nocona's reliance on
turnovers off a tenacious press
managed to force just 6
turnovers and 6 steals in the
contest.
O'Neal scored all 5 of
Nocona's first period points -
but she got no help. Weaver and
Kennedy Hill missed their only
shots of the period, and
Courtney Diehl missed both of
her efforts.
Brock answered by pulling
down 3 offensive and 6 defen-
sive rebounds in the opening
period with Harris scoring off
hers.
Nocona's Blair Dingier
picked up her second foul in the
first period - removing her from
the floor.
Then in the second quarter,
while Nocona found some scor-
ing, thanks to McConnell, she
also picked up her second foul
and had to then sit down.
O'Neal, meanwhile, started set-
tling for three point attempts (0
for 3 in the period), and her
teammates became motionless
never cutting to the rim for a
rebound.
As a result, Brock's 5-5 Josie
Hunt led all players with 5 first
half rebounds, three on the
defensive end.
Meanwhile White and Harris
converted offensive rebounds
into field goals as the Eagles
continued to beat the Lady
Indians around the ears taking
rebounds away from O'Neal,
Dingier and Stephanie Reed.
The tribe mounted a third
period comeback centered on a
pair of 3-pointers from O'Neal,
two buckets by Weaver and one
by Dingier as the Indians suc-
cessfully forced the action.
The result was fouls, fouls
and more fouls.
In fact, Brock was whistled
for eight fouls in the period. But
none were bigger than Dayla
Jones' third foul of the game,
hacking Stefanie Walker, with
6:07 to play in the third fol-
lowed six second seconds later
when White picked up her third
fouling O'Neal. Then O'Neal
sliced into the lane, squeezed
between three defenders and
drew Jones' fourth foul with
4:11 to play.
When Nocona breathing
down the Eagles' neck, White
took an outlet pass and dribbled
30 feet to smash into Reed,
standing stationaiy on the left
block of the lane, drawing a
charging call with 45 seconds to
play and her fourth foul.
O'Neal canned a pair of free
throws to cut Brock's lead to
31-32. Then Weaver drew a foul
and made one of two shots to tie
the game with less than 10 sec-
onds to play - but Payton
Shoush came off the bench and
hit a 15-fboter with two seconds
to go to give the Eagles the lead
34-32.
Harris would lead the fourth
period charge that saw Brock
pull ahead as the Indians would
go a collective 0 of 6 from the
floor frequently never getting a
shot up, and when they did, set-
tling for just one shot.
O'Neal and Diehl would
each connect on a pair of free
throws. Weaver hit one of 2 as
all 5 of Nocona's fourth period
points fame from the free throw
line - and none of the fouls were
the crucial fifth foul in either
White or Jones.
With Nocona unable to find
the bottom of the net from the
floor, Brock slowly pulled away
for the 11 point win and
advance to the area round of the
play-offs.
Nocona meanwhile put up
the basketballs for the year with
a 23-11 record graduating three
senior guards - Weaver, Walker
and McConnell.

Undaunted
Alvord's Maddison McKenzie might have knocked Kristyn Weaver's (14) shot away as teammate Blair
Dingier (23) watches the flight of the ball, but the Lady Indians prevailed Friday winning their game to
determine second place in District 9-AA and enter the playoffs in a winning strteak.
