Scandal-Mongers.
0a you hear the scandal-mongers
Passing by,
Breathing poison in a whisper,
In a sigh f
Moving cautiously and slow,
Smiling sweetly as they go,
Dover noisy — gliding smoothly like a
snake;
Slipping here and slipping there,
Through the meadow f*e«h and fair,
Leaving subtile slime and poison in their
wake.
8»w you not the scandal-monger
As she sat,
Beaming brightly 'neath the roses
In her hat 1
la her dainty gloves and dress,
Angel-like and nothing less
Seemed she—casting smiles and pleasing
words about.
One* sbeshrugged and shook her head,
Kaised ber oys and nothing said
When yon spoke of friends, and yet it left
a doubt.
Did you hear the scandal-monger
At the ball.
Through the music, rhythem, beauty,
Light and all 1
Moving here and moving there,
With a whisper light aB air,
testing shadows ou a sister- womau's fame,
Just a whisper, word, or glance,
As she floated through the dance;
And the world is busy with a spotless name.
Vou will find the scaudal-mongers
Everywhere;
Sometimes men, but often women
Young and fair;
Yet their tongues drop foulest slime,
And they spend their leisure time
Casting mud on those who climb by work
and worth.
Shun them, shun them as you go—
Shnn them, whether high or low,
They are hut the cursed serpents of the
earth.
