It looks strange, very strange,

that the administration party
should object to the election of a

the Pine Tree State, and at the
same time should urge the election

John A, Brooks, a Missour
Democrat andf President of the
Missouri Prohibition Allianoe,
makes the novel claim that the
Democratic party was tbe pioneer
iu prohibitory legislation, in proof
of which he alleges that Maine
was a Democratic State when hei
prohibitory law was enacted in
1846 and amended in 1851 , that
Vermont bad a Democratic Gov-
ernor when her law was paused ;
that it was a Democratic Supreme
Court, with Taney at its head,
which first declared the law con-
stitutional ; that the Democratic
Supreme Court of Missouri gave a
similar decision * and that the tri-
umph ot prohibition in Kansas
was due to a Democratic legislator,
who, at tne importunity of bis,
wile, voted to! tbe measure instead
of against it, as he had intended.
