way through, ho there Feems to be little
cause for congratulation among the
"brethren." The forth warders, too, are
without a shepherd, notwithstanding one
after another hai been "called" to the
"charge" during' the past few weeks
wai hoped that Saturday night's meeting
would resultjin the installation ofsouie one
who would prove indeed a shepherd and a
guide to the poor, scattered, scarred and
frightened sheep thereof, but alas for hu-
man hopes and expectations, the thing did
not so pan out. Now election day will
come, and the fourth ward Democracy will
be without a candidate for alderman. The
state of affaire, though, in the other three
wards is practically no better, for the
"cards" have passed through so many
hands, and been "shuffled" so unskilfully
that not one voter in a hundred will be
able to tell which is "trumps'' on election
day. But then—it's not our "funeral," so
we're not going to weep, wail or gnash
any teeth over the. matter.

ANNOUNCEMENTS.
The Press and Murder and Assassina-
tion.
Our worthy cotemporary, the Dalian
Daily Times, appears very much aggrieved
at our manner of speaking of the Cowart~
Thurmond murder affair, and in a late
issue criticises us in rather indelicate lan-
guage. This we do not care for, we are
used to it: so let that pass, but in this con-
nection let us ask if the press of Texas is
not largely responsible for a great amount
of murder and assassination that takes
piace within the Stale? We think s'uch
is the case, and we will take the above in-
stance as a basis from wnicn to argue.
From the d«y the unfortunate affair oc-
curred to the present time, seven out of
every ten of our Texas exchanges have
spoken in f.uch a way as to make Judge
Thurmond's slayer feel that he was abund-

it was a God-send that Thurmond was put
out of the way in the manner he was, re-
marking, too, that "in all the great throng
of people who looked upon the dead h idy
