The Texas Historical Foundation honored
several businesses and non-profits, an
artist, and an author for preserving the state's
heritage during the 2000 Annual Preservation
Conference in San Antonio on May 4.
The Judge James E. Wheat Award for
outstanding achievement in historic preservation
for business and industry was presented
to Charles C. Butt and H.E.B. for
restoration and adaptive use of the Historic
Arsenal District in San Antonio as its corporate
headquarters. Butt was honored individually
for his restorations of the historic
Aransas Pass Light Station as a retreat and
the Historic Carl Wilheim August Groos
House in San Antonio's King William District
as his personal residence.
The Galveston Historical Foundation
was given the Mary Moody Northen Award
recognizing the outstanding preservation
achievement of a local nonprofit historical
organization, for restoration and re-use of
the Old Galveston Custom House as an administrative
headquarters and preservation
center. The award also recognized GHF's
outstanding history of preservation that has
"raised the bar" for similar projects and set
an example
for other organizations.William C. ; : K
Foster of Cuero
was presented
the Deolece Parmelee
Award for his
outstanding body of
work, including most recently,
the book "The
LaSalle Expedition in Texas:
The Journal of Henri Joutel,
1684-1687", documenting the illfated
voyage of Robert Cavelier, ,
Sieur de LaSalle. Other books
by Foster include "Texas and
Northeastern Mexico,
1689-1768" and "Imaginary
Kingdom: Texas as
Seen by the Rivera and
Rubi Military Expeditions,
1727 and 1767."Sculptor H. Clay Dahlberg of Hunt,
picked up the John Ben Shepperd Jr.
Craftsmanship Award for achievement in
historical preservation for an individual
craftsman. Dahlberg was honored for his
Texas Ranger Museum statue, "John Coffee
Hays at the Battle of Enchanted Rock";
his life-sized statue of Elijah Sterling Clack
Robertson, colonel in the Army of the Republic
of Texas, captain of the Confederate
States of America, Texas Ranger, and
founder of Salado and Salado College; and
for other pieces showing vignettes of Texas
life, cowboys, Indians, and longhorns in
historically precise detail.
The Journalistic Achievement Award
is presented for excellence in the field of
print media. This year the honor was given
to The Southwestern Historical Quarterly,
the publication of the Texas State Historical
Association, for its 1999 publication
of two previously unpublished manuscripts
and diaries of German immigrants, one the
diary of participants in the Texas Revolution
and the other the memoirs of a survivor
of the Nueces Massacre.
Citations of Merit for noteworthy accomplishments
were
also given. Honorees
included Gregg Cantrell
for his book
"Stephen F. Austin:
X' X Empresario of Texas."
The San Antonio Living
History Association was
recognized for its accurate
reenactments of historical
events; the Austin American Statesman
was singled out for its publication
recognizing the sesquicentennial of
the founding of Williamson County. The
Edcouch-Elsa Independent School District
and teacher Frank Guajardo were
:~. honored for an educational program
they developed that used Webbased
Internet techniques to preserve
the culture and oral histories
of two small, rural, mostlyHispanic
communities in South
