P reservation, restoration, and conservation
take many shapes. Some are
colorful, monumental, bold, brilliant,
like a Picasso painting. The movement
is passionate, daring; the execution
elaborate, striking. Some are sepia, small,
modest, quiet, like the whisper of a diary.r
The movement is moderate, private; the
execution, simple, reflective, sometimes ;
restrained. The preservation efforts of
Jeanne Blocker, founder and president of
the Blocker Foundation for the preservation
of early Texas homes, belong in the
latter.
Although many individuals and groups
in Texas are involved in and committed to
historic preservation, the approach, style,
motivation, plan, scope, and level of commitment
varies with the individual and
with the group. Jeanne Blocker had a dream
but that dream, that goal, was halted before
fruition. She died on October 7,1988. But
she left a legacy of the preservation work
she started ten years ago.
"Jeanne began with the purchase of a
Victorian house in New Ulm," said Joh neanne Blocker
Blocker, her husband. "She restored the
