Victoria continued from page 11
worked to retain the San Francisco firm of
Page, Anderson, and Turnbull to develop
a reliable, comprehensive preservation
plan for Victoria. VPI succeeded in obtaining
a cosponsorship of the project
from the city of Victoria and work began
in early 1985.
The preservation plan project resulted
in three significant publications: 1) An
Introductory Guide to Victoria's Historic and
Architectural Resources. This pamphlet
provides both an overview of Victoria's development
and examples of Victoria's residential
architectural styles. It is a concise,
educational complement to the
voluminous Historic Resources Survey.
VPI funded the publication of 5,000
copies for distribution throughout the
area. 2) A Manual for Preserving the Character
of Victoria's Historic Buildings. Meant
to be a guide for property owners wishing
to preserve their home or buildings, this
booklet outlines opportunities and solutions
for design changes, rehabilitation
techniques, and restoration problems.
3) Preservation Projects and Programs. In
this memorandum to VPI, Bruce Anderson recommends courses of action and
programs directed toward further enrichment
of Victoria's heritage. The working
paper touches on specific implementation
measures for VPI's consideration in the future
as it strives to be a substantial contributor
to Victoria's economic and physical
development.
Soon after organizing, VPI set out to
recognize individuals and projects for
their contribution to historic preservation
in Victoria. This effort has evolved
into an annual awards party held in conjunction
with the general membership
meeting each year. Building awards are
designed for four general categories: restoration,
preservation, rehabilitation,
and adaptive use. In addition, block
awards can be presented to honor the restoring
or preserving of three or more
structures on any given city block. The
annual awards party is an opportunity to
generate greater public awareness of preservation
projects in the community and
to stimulate enthusiasm within VPI for
the potential that exists within Victoria.
