II. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION.
Organization and Purpose.
The courses of this department are so organized as to enable
students to meet the legal requirements for first class certificates.
The State of Texas grants only three kinds of certificates to teach
in her public schools. They are: (1) Elementary certificates,
(2) High School certificates, (3) Special certificates. At the
present time the college undertakes to meet the requirements for
Elementary and High School certificates of the first class.
The courses of the department are arranged in two divisions:
(1) General courses which are intended to be helpful to students
who are to do any kind of teaching, (2) Special courses which are
intended to give preparation for teaching certain schools, grades,
or subjects. Of special courses there are three groups: (a)
Courses in rural education, (b) Courses in elementary education,
(c) Courses in secondary education. Students who expect
to teach only in the elementary grades, town or county are advised
to take courses in group (b). Those who expect to do any
teaching in any kind of a high school should take courses in
group (c). Courses in group (a) should be especially helpful
to those students who expect to teach in rural schools either of
an elementary or high school grade. The general courses in education
should make up about one-half or two-thirds of the student's
work in this department.
