Correct pronounciation is insisted upon from the first. Vocabulary,
idioms, and grammatical principles are fixed in memory
by extensive use of French conversation, and thus a living language
is produced, not a mere book-language. In the first year
the emphasis is placed on the natural language of life and the
more formal productions of literature are deferred to the following
years. To this end short stories, novels, and plays that
best portray French life, customs, and ideals are read. During
the year the collateral reading of at least one English book on
French life, customs, and ideals will be required.
